Why Babies Put Everything in Their Mouths (And Why You Don’t)

Our sense of smell is, in effect, an organic chemical detector; unpleasant compounds, associated with decomposition or poisoning (like sulfur), will cause an almost instantaneous urge to recoil, long before it touches our lips.

Touch = Physical Safety Check (Contact): Before tasting anything, you usually touch it. Your lips and fingers are equipped with countless touch sensors that analyse texture. Are you sticking your finger into a unnaturally sticky, slimy, uncomfortably hot, or sharp substance? In nature, sliminess can signify a bacterial biofilm, which signals danger.

Gustation = Micro-Dose Analysis (Internal): If it has passed the first three filters, you take a tiny sip. You wouldn’t normally stuff your face full of a totally unknown substance; instead, you’d tentatively sample it, to see if the inner systems detect anything overtly poisonous.

Specialised eaters, like pandas, whose diet consists primarily of bamboo, know exactly what’s safe — it’s in their genes. We, however, are omnivores. When our earliest ancestors emerged into new terrains, faced with countless unfamiliar plants and creatures, this layered testing regime was our built-in behavioral programme, which kept the human species from succumbing to acute food poisoning.
