Daughter from Hell

I've been into singer & songwriter and pop -folk pop, in this case- lately, and I only started listening to Gracie Abrams not too long ago. she has some popular songs that I'd heard before, like I Love You, I'm Sorry and That's So True, but it wasn't until like a month ago since I really got acquainted with her music, with I Told You Things.

it's so satisfying to sing this entire verse without stopping, it feels more like reciting than singing. okay, her vocals aren't the strongest. but still, this live version made me feel things, and I'm here for it.

I'm curious about the rest of her discography, so I thought it would be convenient to review her third studio album, Daughter from Hell, while discovering more of her music.

Hit the Wall

a good opener for the album, considering how it proceeds. I saw lyrics from this being shared on social media, and they resonated with me at the time: “I hit the wall, I just hit the wall/I'm not a problem you can solve.” the lyrics might have been the first thing that caught my attention, but the song isn't as captivating as I hoped. there's this weird thing with mental illness and drugs going on in Gracie's songs. “I try to be violent but I get caught/a room full of doctors and an inkblot.” be for real right now. I don't know if it's because I work in the medical field or I've watched too many videos where they make fun of some ridiculous lyrics, but... like, why do you wanna be clinically diagnosed so badly? it feels like that one Logic song all over again.

oh... a song about a breakup from the perspective of the person who broke things off.  being there would sound so good right now. literally. this song is really good; it's the best one on the album, I think. I'll download this on my iPod right now.

is this about pick-me girls? or maybe friendship breakups? I couldn't understand what went down between the people in the song. my best guess is that it's about one of her friends using her for fame, idk.

unlike the previous album review I did, which I yapped paragraphs long about stuff, I don't really have much to say about the songs this time, mainly because I didn't understand them. this is coming from someone who actually likes hidden meanings and complex sentences (because they can be interpreted in many different ways and I like making them about my life), but these lyrics are just so vague. I'm sure they are all meaningful... only to Gracie.

I'd never thought I'd be complaining about this, but I wish some of the songs were shorter. they were long without being anywhere near fulfilling. it exhausted me listening to all 16 of them because, again, Gracie was in her #vagueposting era, and the listening experience got real boring real quick.

the worst part is, the tunes are actually good; it's the lyrics that's the problem. it's actually the only problem, and she claims to be a songwriter! it's a shame all that producing was wasted on this album, if you ask me.

I guess there's nothing much left to say. so... here's my overall rating of Daughter from Hell... and it's... 6/10. Pitchfork rated it 6.2/10, so I think it's consistent. they also rated Peppa's Adventures: The Album by Peppa Pig 6.5/10, so I don't know what that says about this album.

maybe it'll grow on me as I keep listening. you've read it right: even though I didn't really like the songs, I saved a lot of them to my library because I want to have a mainstream pop summer where I will listen to, well, mainstream pop and make up for the lost time when I didn't listen to mainstream pop.
