I finished Celeste! + many screenshots

(spoiler warning if you haven’t played it!)

Celeste was beautiful! i loved the characters and the mystery of the world immediately! but the huge elephant in the room was finally revealed to me… it’s that platformer games arent for me... so i played in assist mode for the second half of the whole thing LOL

i’m not an official game critic or anything, but i’d give it a solid 8/10!

it’s just WAY TOO SHORT!!!!

from my perspective, Celeste explores self identity, the road to acceptance and depression. Madeline is forced to confront the physical form of the “Part of Her” that she’s been running from her whole life. “She” materializes after Madeline had started climbing to the summit of Celeste; a mysterious mountain that seems to not want her there with everything in it!

just to feel something, Madeline starts climbing with no explanation even to herself. she wants to feel accomplished, to feel anything. but the “Part of Her” sabotages her attempts as a form of protection… or fear.

there, she meets Theo!

another climber looking for a getaway through the wishes of feeling lost. he’s also infamous for taking selfies for his InstaPix!

(and a poor soul that was not aware of the mountain’s history…) (but neither did i)

just like Madeline had the worst part of her become real through the mountain, Theo suffeted through being trapped inside a crystal with a thousand eyes watching him…

he felt like the mountain knew him better than he did himself.

i had wished there was more where that came from! but after we rescue Theo, we do not hear much more than that…

a silly detail of him still caring about his pictures through unconsciousness lol

that’s when they almost fell to their deaths!

and this is when they had a beautiful heart-to-heart!

here we learn that when Theo previously called Madeline “Alex” by accident, it’s because he had been associating her with his sister back home.

this section probably had the most amount of dialogue in it, but i loved it so much!

we learn a lot about the both of them, and even some of their family members!

i’m never forgetting the feather technique ever again.

at some point, Madeline has to confront “Her”…

the biggest plottwist of the game was Madeline’s fall when she was close to the summit.

the “Part of Her” was the culprit, bringing her down all the way to the bottom of mount Celeste where water gathers. she loathers her. hates her. but must work with her if she wants to reach the top.

the old lady had told Madeline as a form of advice: “maybe she’s scared. talk to her.”

the “Part of Her” was stobborn, annoying, selfish. but… scared?

well, she doesn’t have to be scared alone. and the scariest part, is that she kind of believes it!

they’ve been fighting this whole time, when they could’ve only done it together.

“She” brings up a point after all of this, asking Madeline if she’s really heading home after everything.

the mountain has given the “Part of Her” a body. an independent body that she can comfortably live in without relying on Madeline. even after making up, “She” doesn’t want to lose control, or go back to just being a feeling.

they make a point to just enjoy the view for a while…

(as you can see, i did not care to collect all the strawberries…)

🍓

the ending was so nice… i expected it to be tragic or at least bittersweet, but i’m glad to see a happy ending!!

im assuming from the art that Madeline is staying for a while longer for the “Part of Her”! I never expected them to make up throughout the game. but they are literally the same person... :’)

thanks for reading!

nice!!! to me, celeste is a game about acceptance. and it works for everyone. in today's society it feels as though (and maybe this has always been the case) that people REJECT negative parts and emotions within themselves. in turn (very briefly put) it leads to negative "sides" or emotions controlling your life more than you control them. they always exist within you, so why fight them in the first place? essentially, celeste goes through different stages of this as well, the first one is to recognize the emotion, accepting it and, most importantly, letting it **coexist** with yourself. it doesnt need to take over the ship, but it also doesnt need to dictate things, nor you should you dictate things around it :)

im glad you had a good time! if you enjoy exploration/mystery/narrative driven games, i highly recommend you play outer wilds (you do need to get used to some weird controls, though, i think)
