Explaining the final layer of hell

It's actually a good piece of literature that inspired me deeply and I especially love the metaphorical depiction of the final layer of hell I've not seen many people discuss it with the same focus I gave it and I paid more attention to that part than to any other section of the book to the point that I remain poetically obsessed with it

After virgil has spoken with the giant antaeus and persuaded him to help them antaeus lifts dante and virgil, carries them down to the bottom of the pit, and sets them directly upon the surface of the frozen lake of cocytus which is the ninth circle the cold hell! dante depicts the final layer of hell as cold and frozen because coldness here is not just a climatic condition but a symbol of the utmost distance from the light of god and the warmth of divine love...in the upper circles of hell fire still carries a distorted trace of energy and movement, whereas torment in the last circle turns into absolute icy stillness expressing the death of the soul and the freezing of the will and the extinction of any desire for goodness or repentance and this ice imprisons demons and rebels in invisible bonds of rigidity they're not burned by fire but confined in an endless spiritual frost as if exiled to the furthest point from divine warmth where nothing remains but emptiness/ cold and futility...thus coldness becomes a metaphor for the absence of love and mercy and for a cosmic state of complete separation from the source of life and light so the final hell is therefore ice because whoever inhabits it has severed the last thread binding them to the spiritual warmth that keeps a being alive in terms of meaning not merely in terms of the body
