posers tarnish the reputation of the alt community

Is it just me, or are there WAYYYY more posers now??? I love that the alt community is growing, but a lot of people (especially on Instagram and Tiktok) only care about the aesthetic. I see "goth" people who don't know anything about the culture and oversexualize themselves, and it only feeds into the goth mommy stereotype.

My former friend literally claimed to be goth but she was against abortion, she was transphobic, and she knew NOTHING about the culture. She said to me once, AND I QUOTE, "Goth isn't about politics, it's about how you dress" If you're going to be a poser, at least educate yourself a little so it's believable.

I know that there are people who are just now getting into the scene, so they don't know a lot of things about the culture, that's completely okay! I'm just talking about the people who only do it for looks or attention.

I REALLY don't like those people that call anyone a larp if they don't listen to certain music, some people don't wanna listen to the heaviest song ever created by a niche band with 2 monthly listeners, popular music is popular for a reason.

Don't even BUTTER MY BUSCUIT on "2000s older brother core," they always use the same song for every video.

Just remember, as long as you're willing to learn about the community and the lifestyle, you're not a poser!!

I'm not a goth myself but my girlfriend is. She's already quite introverted as is, but watching her feel alienated from the goth community as more "posers" dominate it is quite sad. She finds joy in collecting dead animal bones. She has her umbilical cord inside a little jar. She's even held a real human skull before. All things that are quite normal for goths.

But these days, she sees posts from people getting grossed out by these sorts of stuff. Then you scroll through their profiles and see that they're self-proclaimed goths. She doesn't even call herself a goth anymore out of fear that some guy will call her a "goth mommy" and ask her to "step on me!!!"

I may not know much about goth culture itself, but my girlfriend and the other goths she's shown me have always embodied kindness and acceptance towards outcasts. Being weird and wholly yourself to express your emotions. All of which are lost on the people who think it's "wear black, be mean, don't be cringe."

I personally don't like calling people posers, because it scares people away from joining a community. I skateboard, but it took me a really long time to get started cuz I was afraid that being a beginner would get me called a poser. I feel the same way about any community where, someone might be genuinely interested but is still navigating what it means to be a part of that community.

However, if you say all are welcome to sheep and wolves, you'll only get wolves. When these types of people (or worse, conservatives) are welcomed into the community, it leads to people like my girlfriend feeling alienated from the community that they helped build. It helped my girlfriend feel normal in all her weirdness to meet other people like her, but it's quite hard to spot these people now as they're slowly getting pushed out of their own community.

Anyway, it's not That serious but it's really interesting to think about. And as my girlfriend says: "I miss when being goth felt like being a Creature."

maybe a weird perspective but i kinda consider most people innately posers of a community, esp those who upheld said communities beliefs. and not that theyre necessarily wrong ... just that you are in and of itself performing for the communitiy ... and not with disingenuous intent either. theres a performance in truth & authenticity as well. i think those who r the """real goths""" are those who are just .. kinda like that. you know what i mean? like the guy in regular clothes at the punk show. so on so forth. not to say ur friends a total dick though like god yea
