I'm in college now and lots of my friends talk about their guilt of not going on a vacation this summer, for various reasons. If you know me , you know that I LOVE traveling! It's a very cool experience to have. However I think I kept my opinion about vacation culture in the shadows for long enough because I knew I was a minority in this mindset.

I am not against summer vacays, I am against the pressure to have them. I see so many people that go on voyages they don't really want just to fit in and be able to post that instagram story. I think everyone is obsessed with being at the beach , getting tanned in mid July or August, spending more than you can afford so you can go on a popular location that is hyped on your feed.
A thing that helped me detach was the fact that I have ginger skin (freckled) and I just can't get tanned, but I don't think that's the only reason why I stray away from these things. What if I wanna go see the snow on a beach in winter? What if I wanna see mountains in their autumn foliage? Is something really less beautiful and enjoyable just because it is not a trend?

And why don't we use our own money towards OUR enjoyment. Why would you use your hard earned money to please your followers? And why do we get the type of followers that like us only for what we can provide. For me as an ambivert , vacations can be exhausting sometimes, the planning, the money , the social pressure to do certain things and talk to certain ppl. Unless there is a place where I really want to go , I find it relaxing to just stay at home during the summers, to enjoy ice cream in a park, to go on a local hike, to help tourists get away from overpriced restaurants and hotels.
I think it's time we let go of guilt, and start living our own lives. We don't need to all go on the same vacation stereotype in order to be perceived as relevant. We need to go wherever the frick we want, even if it's our own bed for a WHOLE DAY. I'm serious. After a whole year of hard work we deserve a day where we don't do absolutely nothing.
But while I'm here taking a nap, a friend texted me that they feel guilt that they're at home in July and another said they're stressed with packing and booking stuff and they wish they had a break, because they had a hard year.
I wish I could give everyone a hug and encourage you all to just do whatever makes you happy and stop striving to be average, honor your own needs this summer guys.
Lots of love,
Theo

To be honest, as much as I like vacations, they aren't the most appealing to me; at least the sterotypical beach vacation isn't. Social media feeds can definitely influence how we preceive our own lives. It can be easy to fall into the mindset of, "If I'm not doing what they're doing, than I'm not fully living my life." In reality, social media feeds are highly polished and even artificial, not showing what a person's life is truly like outside of what they want to display. Vacations stress me out due to the crowds and lack of comfort (even if I stay in a nice hotel, I'm stll not going to be able to sleep well or feel like I can fully relax). Also, I feel like getting away from home to relax doesn't have to mean going outside of the country, or even out of state. Small trips to places nearby (maybe two hours away at most) with close friends or family are honestly more enjoyable to me. I like going to local shops or flea market-type stores, going out to eat, and enjoying the environment around me. This was a ramble, but yeah. I feel like there shouldn't be pressure on us to go with the trends. Instead, we should go where we want to go, go to the places that truly make us happy
