more shitty free verse poetry

I saw you in my dream last night

You were smoking cigarettes backwards,

The burning part in your lips

It didn’t matter, ‘cause it was just a dream

And you could laugh it off

so we both laughed.

I was finally tall enough

Taller than you or that old house you had

I swayed like a palm tree

In the hot breeze

So when you laughed you had to look up at me.

I tried to remember those nasty PSAs about the effects of smoking

But I’d never watched them myself

I’d only gotten the information through my sister

Like a hand me down sweater,

So the image didn’t materialize as you stood, like it should’ve.

I don’t remember the last time I respected you,

In full, I mean.

Last I checked, you had a new car.

One that didn’t have room for me.

So I guess I’ll just meet you in my dreams again,

small as a child, watching you bite the burning ends of cigarettes
