“I refuse to abandon her as long as she'd feel lost,” she added. “It’s cruel.”

She took one last drag before stubbing out her cigarette in the ashtray on the small round table on the balcony.

“It’s cruel…” I repeated, followed by a deep breath. “Anyhow: congrats, I could never quit these little shits.”

“That’s because you have no reason to.”

My head tilted to the side, showing my confusion.

“Lung cancer isn’t a reason?”

“It’s only up to you. It’s your want against your need. Find someone who needs you to quit, someone important, and you’ll quit, because you’ll love them more than you need that.”
