The show is easily one of the best recent incarnations of Transformers. It's sorta G1-ish but also completely different. It actually kinda like the War For Cybertron Trilogy, but done right. The entire series is now available to watch for free on Youtube on the official Transformers page.
Season 1 does drag a bit with the flashbacks, but the show slowly reveals itself through these flashbacks. For one thing, this is the first show that gives you more backstory to the days before the war, where Autobots and Decepticons lived and partied together. You would get a scene of BumbleBee watching Soundwave dance while Optimus Prime and Megatron are sitting in the corner of the bar discussing politics. You get to see Stascream was a jerk even before the war. They really flesh out life on Cybertron before everything goes bad.

Season 2 is when things really heats up and the fight for the All Spark happens on earth. The thing is, this series really doesn't involve the humans beyond the Transformers being on earth. There are some similar elements such as Starscream being a backstabber, but Megatron quickly deals with Starscream. So you'd have the main battle for the All Star, and also Starscream in the background with his own schemes. There are other twists such as introducing Cheetor from Beast Wars into the series. Actually, not just Cheetor, but they also introduce Skybyte from RiD 2001 into this series. Season 2 is just action packed with maybe 1 or 2 lame episodes.
Season 3 deals with a sort of "end" to the war, but still really action packed with new enemies besides the Decepticons. You get the Quintessons, a rogue band of Transformers, dimension hopping Megatron, and even Tarn from the IDW comics. Though this Tarn is nowhere near as hardcore as the comic Tarn. You also see Hotrod take a sort of leadership role while Optimus is trapped in a loop. Hell, Hotrod as unofficial leader does a better job at leading than Rodimus from G1. The series comes to an end with 2 lengthy special episodes that really caps off the story and an end to the war. Autobots and Decepticons working together to fight a bigger threat, or refusing to fight because they're tired of it.
The biggest issue is the show's low budget and restricted runtime. Each episode is only about 10 minutes long. There are plenty of standout character moments that give them a little more depth. Stuff like Optimus Prime and Megatron actually sitting down to talk and discuss peace terms. Grimlock being an adventurer and a high society socialite. Optimus just working his butt off to rebuild instead of always fighting. This has easily one of my favorite incarnations of Soundwave.
Oh and Optimus Prime doesn't die in this one. Thank god!
