Review of Obsession (2026)--No Spoilers

I saw Obsession today, I really liked it :D.

Here's the review:

Plot: The story follows Bear, a man who has a crush on a co-worker called Nikki. After realising that she will be leaving her job, Bear decides to break a "One Wish Willow" which will let him wish anything and have it become true, so he decides tomake Nikki "love him more than anything in the world" Making her become obsessed (ba dum tss) with him to the point of it being terrifying.

7.5/10 Plot, interesting plot but nothing groundbreaking.

Acting: The entire cast of the 4 main characters are incredible actors, the characters they act feel like real humans and not like puppets for a script. The actors for Nikki (Inde Navarrette) and Bear (Michael Johnston) are THE highlight of the movie. Bear's reactions are so visceral they don't even feel scripted and Nikki acts in such an unnerving and unpredictable way it makes it seem as if she was possesed.

10/10 Acting, the best part of the movie imo and one of the best acted movies I've ever seen

Characters: The characters apart from Bear and Nikki are quite one-sided; even then, Bear and Nikki tend to stay in one state of mind from the 30-ish minute mark onwards. You'll probably feel sympathy for them as when they're on-screen they are likeable (ofc tthere's always one or two lines that'll make you frustrated but that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things)

7/10 Characters, a bit one-sided but sympathetic nontheless

Ending: Perfect, will not be revealing further (as I don't want to spoil anything :P) but it's simply amazing

10/10 Ending, Perfect

Structure: From the start to the wish scene the characters get introduced, from then onwards the story stays relatively tense and with momentary scenes which vary from "that's weird" to making you cover your mouth in surprise/shock

8/10 Structure, like most psychological horror movies although this one sticks out by knowing when to implement the shocking moments so the audience never gets bored

Violence/Intimate Acts: Bear and Nikki makeout, kiss and have intercourse, it's not drawn out so it's not that uncomforteable but if you don't like that kind of stuff you might have to suffer for about 5-10 seconds each time. Most of the violence is blood from cuts or things related to Bear's dead cat (it's shown in the first 5 minutes of the film), although it's important to mention that there are one or two scenes with more extreme violence

7/10 Violence/Intimate Acts, various but brief intimate acts and violence is mostly just blood but there's some gore (imagine hereditary levels of violence)

Cinematography (Plus Editing): Beautiful lighting, the blue and yellow color schemes remind me of Hereditary (One of the director's (Curry Barker) favourite movies). The editing and filming is majestic, the movie knows exactly where to put the camera. It just feels like an homage to Hereditary

8/10 Cinematography, beautiful lighting, cinematography and editing that looks like Hereditary

Reaction: Me and my friend came out of the cinema and just said "holy sh*t". If you're like us and expected this film just be hype you'll probably get a similar reaction. The film just shocks you

9/10 Reaction; Me, my friend and the rest of the cinema was left dumbfounded for a few seconds

Is It Scary?: I wasn't personally scared apart from the occasional scare although I will admit that the movie instead makes you feel anxious and will leave you thinking for a good 10 minutes after the film.

8/10 Scariness, Not "Scary" per se but it is quite disturbing and will insteadfill you with dread

Would I recommend it?: ABSOLUTELY, one of the best horror movies in recent memory. Don't let the hype trick you like it did to me, it IS that scary

Overall:

Objective: 8.5/10, Not groundbreaking but interesting watch and really good execution

Subjective: 9.5/10, Amazing and one of the best horror movies of the 2020's
