Wolfenstein: The New Order :- The Shooter That Proved Stories Matter

I've been playing video games for over 10 years, and during that time I've finished hundreds of titles across almost every genre. Some games are fun for a few hours and then disappear from your memory. Others leave a lasting impression. Wolfenstein: The New Order belongs in the second category.

Released in 2014 by MachineGames, Wolfenstein: The New Order revived a legendary franchise

Story: What If the Nazis Won?

The game follows B.J. Blazkowicz, an American soldier fighting during World War II. After a failed mission to stop General Deathshead, B.J. suffers a severe head injury and spends years in a coma.

When he finally wakes up, the world has changed completely.

The Nazis have won the war and now control almost every part of the world using advanced futuristic technology. Giant robots patrol the streets, citizens live under constant surveillance, and resistance fighters are nearly wiped out.

What makes the story stand out isn't just the alternate history—it's the writing. B.J. isn't a typical action hero. Throughout the campaign, his internal thoughts reveal fear, guilt, and determination, making him one of the better-written protagonists in modern FPS games.

The supporting cast is equally memorable, and every character feels like they genuinely have something to lose.

Gameplay Classic FPS Done Right

The gameplay is where Wolfenstein truly shines.

Combat is fast, brutal, and satisfying. Unlike many modern shooters, the game gives players freedom to approach fights however they want.

You can:

  • Rush enemies with dual-wielded assault rifles.
  • Sneak through levels using silenced pistols and knives.
  • Mix stealth and aggressive combat whenever the situation changes.

Dual-wielding almost every weapon is easily one of the most enjoyable mechanics in the game. Charging into a room with two shotguns never gets old.

Weapon feedback is excellent, enemies react realistically to bullets, and every firefight feels impactful.

Level Design

Instead of creating repetitive corridors, the developers built levels that reward exploration.

Hidden collectibles, alternate paths, secret rooms, and upgrades encourage players to look around rather than simply running toward the next objective.

Each location feels unique, from underground resistance bases to massive Nazi research facilities and heavily guarded prisons.

Graphics and Atmosphere

Even today, the game holds up surprisingly well.

The environments are detailed, character animations are convincing, and the futuristic Nazi technology creates a unique visual style rarely seen in shooters.

Lighting, sound design, and music work together to create a tense atmosphere throughout the campaign.

What I Liked

  • Excellent alternate-history story.
  • Strong character development.
  • Fast and satisfying gunplay.
  • Freedom to choose stealth or action.
  • Memorable villains.
  • Great world-building and atmosphere.

What Could Be Better

  • Enemy AI can sometimes feel predictable.
  • Certain levels are slightly longer than necessary.
  • Limited weapon customization compared to modern shooters.

Final Verdict

After more than a decade of gaming, I still think Wolfenstein: The New Order is one of the better story-driven first-person shooters available. It successfully blends emotional storytelling with intense action and creates an alternate world that's both fascinating and terrifying.

While it isn't perfect, its engaging campaign, satisfying gameplay, and memorable characters make it a game that's easy to recommend to any FPS fan.
