I've been bullied all my life, and I still have a lot of bullying to go through. I've grown up with media where only now I've realized that looks played a part in the treatment of "comic relief" characters, for example; Abby Mallard from Chicken Little- all of the characters of that movie even, Carl Wheezer, Mater, LeFou, Mr. Smee, Richard Watterson. It's either braces, fat, tooth gap, glasses, long face, big nose, too tall, too short, etc. And those features would define that person's existense. So what do my features define?
Well, I'm short, so that means I'm some bratty baby, I have freckles and acne so that means my skin isn't pleasant to the touch, I've got redhair so that means I'm fiery yet soulless and ugly, I've got blue eyes so that means they're completely useless, I've got a big forehead so that means I look like a big headed idiot, my face goes easily red so I look constantly sunburnt, I have wide hips so that means I'm asking for attention, I am ugly and unpleasant, and apparently to some people's assumptions- I don't even cry about it.
Apparently people despise the colour orange, despise redhaired people, only see them as jokes or something to make fun of. And all I can think about is me being a first year in middle school getting bullied because of how I looked, and finding out for the first time that people didn't like me for something I couldn't control, and something I never even thought about not liking. I used to truly despise what I looked like, I still have issues with it, I still think about bleaching my hair- but then I'd miss the proof of my ancestry and how much I truly love my hair. And because of the bullying, I've learned how much I love the existence of colour and anything naturally created. The fact that something happened for trees to have different shapes in their bark, for the rings inside it to show their age, for their roots to help them communicate and learn- it's just like humans, we're all so different, our wrinkles and stretchmarks show our age, our ancestry and language in both body and voice is how we communicate, the different shapes and sizes in our body and soul forming our unique family tree. I find it beautiful that nature can create such a bond in humans, that we're all so uniquely different in such beautiful ways. The fact our noses look different, our eyes are different colours and shapes, our skins are different colours- all because of the climate our ancestors lived in to survive the sun or lack thereof. That nature herself and evolution helped is live in this world we are so lucky to be born in, it's beautiful. But apparently not enough people think that way, men make beauty standards that go on for generations and plague society and the people surviving in it, it's cruel. We have the audacity to take animals into the mix as well, it's disgusting.
Because of what I've noticed in life, I find it impossible to find something ugly if it has soul. I can't find a colour ugly because I know an artist out there can use that colour and make the most beautiful piece of art you've ever seen that defines humanity, I can't find a person ugly because due to their features I can figure out their ancestry and how much they smile, just by looking at them, I can't find an animal ugly because I know it's a creature that matters so much to the circle of life, I can't find something ugly if it's doing what it's supposed to be doing for life and for yourself. So yeah, I'm against plastic surgery, I'm against botox, tanning as a white person or that pale-ing treatment thing if you've got a darker skin tone, I'm against ozempic if you use it for a non-medical reason, I'm against everything that has something to due with the obsession of beauty standards. Why can't we just exist and appreciate the working body you own?? I'm only for the treatments I've mentioned if they're for medical purposes, but if you only use them because you're insecure? Then I beg you to go outside and see how it doesn't matter. I'm tired of people trying so hard to look like something else, when I think we need to start finding the beauty in the world you live in while it still exists. The planet is dying, and because of all the products you're buying and all the capitalism you're feeding, and all the bullshit ai you're using, you're losing the time to admire the beauty that already exists.
And, I haven't gotten to talk about this, but someone else's body is NOT your problem, especially if they're "fatter". Everyone's body has different needs, everyone's body has different problems, everyone's body is different, everyone is going through different things and that is NOT YOUR PROBLEM. The only time you should worry about someone elses weight, is if it makes it hard for them to exist and thrive as they want to thrive. That's when you should worry, especially with those kpop idols I see- being skinny is way too normalized. I've seen way too often where I can straight up see someones bones through their skin, THAT IS NOT HEALTHY. Please eat, get chubby thighs, get a bit of a tummy, it'll help you survive and live better, I promise. Be comfortable in your body, don't put it under so much pressure.
I yearn for a day where people of all colours, shapes and sizes are represented in the media they watch, and not as a joke, but as a human being and a well written character. And for me, personally, I yearn for a day where a redhaired character doesn't end up as a joke somewhere, and that when someone makes a joke about someone with redhair, they get the repercussions, and that goes for every joke about someone's looks. I'm tired of trying to have fun watching something, before getting reminded that some people have never dealt with getting bullied like that- I'm looking at you blooper bit after (or during?) the end credits of Pitch Perfect, plus I hope we get more characters with red hair that are actually good characters and well liked and have their redhair not be one of their main personality traits. And I've noticed that a lot of redhaired characters often get more hate from the fandom- like Bloom from Winx, but that's just me, I guess. I hope me talking about being bullied for my redhair doesn't seem out of touch, I just can't completely talk about the topic of other people's struggles because I haven't lived those struggles, and I know those people who have dealt with it can talk about it way better than I can.
I know I sound like a complete boho privileged-fake-hippie when I talk about this kind of thing, but I genuinely do love the natural things in life, the beauty of it and the things mother nature created, all humans are her creations. Yet we form the part that's ugly by feeding into capitalism with racist and sexist beliefs. I hope one day we realize what this world truly is and how much nature matters more than what it looks like, enjoy it while it exists and see the "beauty that is living" (quote from the song Incomprehensible by Big Thief).
As much as the movie Pocahontas is terrible representation and is disrespectful to a true strory, the song Colours Of The Wind still is my inspiration to admiring the world around me. Find beauty in the little thing, I beg. For example, there's a guy I have a crush on, he plays guitar and all I can think about is how I admire him embracing music, how his hands twitch like he's plucking a string, how he taps his foot like he's hitting the base of a drumset, the fact that for practically millions of years of music has still lingered to this boy's soul and self expression. It's beautiful.
I think you can probably assume I'm quite fond of Native American/ indigenous and Ancient Greek ideas of how we live in our world, it's why I don't agree with any of the forms of how people see Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the true existence of the soul, she is what beauty represents, she is not a slim-thick blonde blue-eyed pink woman, she is not a cartoon, she is not a celebrity you have a parasocial relationship with, she is not someone to describe on a page or in a word-doc. She is all around us in this iridescent way of colour transformation, she is the flutter in our body, she is womanhood, she is soul, she is vibrations in your teeth, she is wisdom, she is age, she is a pure admirer of existence, she is not what man wants her to be, she is what women deep down truly are.
And I'm sorry if this sounds like I don't like men, I do like men, but you know damn well it's not the same. And if you think you need to argue with me? Then you're a part of the problem.
xoxo
