Experimental music can generally be described as music that steps outside the boundaries of genre conventions and challenges expectations of how music is "supposed" to be structured.
Experimental metal isn't really a genre so much as a descriptor. There are countless different types of experimental metal many of which sound drastically different. Bands such as Mr. Bungle, Neurosis, Arcturus, and maudlin of the Well were my introduction to it, but they all approach experimentation in completely different ways.
I'll be listing a variety of approaches to experimental metal that I personally really enjoy. A lot of it is just interesting avant-grade metal but there’s a pretty wide variety here in terms of styles/execution.
Virgin Black – Sombre Romantic (2000/2001)
Drink The Midnight Hymn, Of Your Beauty (Not the most extreme but worth noting)
Gothic Metal, Symphonic Metal
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium(2006)
Feasting fools, summoning scenes
Avant-Garde Metal, Progressive Metal
Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters (1995)
Avant-Garde Metal, Progressive Metal
Fleurety - Min Tid Skal Komme (1995)
Black Metal, Atmospheric Black Metal
Today Is the Day - Temple of the Morning Star (1997)
Noise Rock, Avant-Garde Metal
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Grand Opening and Closing (2001)
Avant-Garde Metal, Experimental Rock
Ephel Duath - The Painter's Palette (2003)
Unpoetic circle, The Others Touch
Progressive Metal, Avant-Garde Metal
This is more of a filler blog since I’m working on a Deathrock related one that’s taking me a bit longer since it’s not gunna be the usual ‘look at this stuff I found and like” post.
Lots of weird stuff here, not expecting anyone to enjoy these necessarily but at least find them interesting. These albums are quite the ride if you ask me. If anyone has anything similar to the first one I’d love to hear it, I enjoyed that album lots.
Okay goodbye good day goodnight good morrow
