why does no one fucking care about animals?? (rant)

i feel like im going insane WHY DOES NO ONE FUCKING CARE???

everyone just sounds like hypocrites. like, every one is sad when an animal dies in a movie and when companies test on animals, but when it comes to factory farming, and the meat and dairy industry, everyone makes excuses to justify it.

"but what about protein!" "what about b12!" "but were omnivores!" "its a part of the food chain!"

1. there are all different kinds of plant protein. for example: tofu has 15 grams of protein per 100 grams, which is even more than meat. 2. b12 is already supplement, wherever you get it from. the animals you eat are fed b12. its not that different than taking a supplement directly, where no harm is done. 3. yes, we are omnivores, but that just means we can digest meat. we can digest alcohol even though it has no nutritional value. we can get all of our nutrients from plants. 4. yes, eating meat is a part of the food chain, but we are still omnivores and we can still eat plant based.

i understand that there are people who have very little food and need all that they can, whether its vegan or not. I understand there are people with arfid and feel more comfortable eating meat. i understand that there are people who dont cook for themselves or live in a house that serves meat. I'm not talking about those people. at the end of the day, people need food to survive and if meat is some of the only food you can get, then eat it.

but im talking about the people who have the choice not to. and its so crazy when its a veterinarian or a zoologist that justify eating meat. like you dedicate your whole life purpose to help and study animals, but you let the horrors of factory farming go over your head and eat the carcass of an animal that you say you care for. its so fucking sick and twisted.

for those who dont know, the animals are kept in tight cages for their whole lives, just to be hung upside down and gutted. male CHICKS are useful, so theyre put on a conveyer belt to a shredder, where theyre shredded ALIVE. BABY CHICKS. chickens are bred and pumped with hormones to give them more meat to the point where theire legs collapse under them due to the weight.cows are raped and impregnated over, and over again to keep them producing milk for OUR consumption. the calves, who should be drinking milk, are given formulas to live off of. they arent given a drop of ANY cows milk. all so we can drink the nutrients meant for a baby animal from another species. its fucking disgusting.

"but what about local butchers and ethical sources"

ill agree that letting the cows and pigs play outside is nicer than keeping them in a cage, but youre still breeding them to die, which is still sick and twisted. people will say that theyre giving their life a purpose and that the animals are still respected, but what life are you actually giving them if you kill them before its even over? and youre raising these animals. shouldnt they feel like pets to you? what sicko kills their pets.

i could go on about the environmental impacts, but thats a different conversation.

anyway, my conclusion is that i dont understand why people say they care about animals, but still eat them when they dont have to.

im not trying to tell people what to do,, but i just want people to take a closer look at what is happening. personally, i dont think the torture and death of an animal is worth a meal. also, small steps still make a big difference. everyone can agree that changing habits are hard, but its worth it when so much harm is being done. so yeah, keep eating meat if you want, but remember where your food comes from.

Hi, I just wanted to start off by listing my qualifications on this topic. I went to vocational high school where I majored in animal welfare and currently in college for anthropology. I worked as an animal groomer and trainer for two years, my school housed many farm animals to companion animals that me and my classmates helped take care of throughout our four years there. I spent the first two years in school learning how to properly take care of a multitude of animals like farm animals like cows, chickens, ducks, emus, and bison to name a few. We also learned about the food industry and how these animals are treated. One point that you brought up that I completely agree with is that the majority of the animal food industry is horrible, from gestation crates on pig farms to “free roam chicken”. But I think if you are able to consume ethically raised meats and animal products is okay I will have three main reasons why. 1 is that raising animals to end up being ethically slaughtered for food is not wrong. At my school we raised cows. They all live very nice lives. Only about a dozen of them with dozens of miles are able to roam freely and rotate multiple pastures throughout the year. One of our older cows, Carl, began becoming aggressive with some of the younger calves. Carl had lived a very full and long life he had been taking care of very well and nearing the end of his life as a result of his aggressiveness with the young calves he was sent to slaughter. His meat was sent to the school's bistro to be used as meat for food there. I think this is a really good example of how these animals are able to be ethically raised for meat while living a fulfilled life. He spent years as an example to teach hundreds of students. I remember learning how to groom cows and Carl was one of them. He offered a lesson for me and my classmates. I think if an animal is able to live a fulfilling life and then able to provide food for multitude of people is actually a better outcome than just passing away because it allows them to continue living and provide something from their life making their life that much more fulfilling. This leads me to my second point: over the last year I have been learning about indigenous culture and communities and their connection to food. I think indigenous communities serve such a wonderful example of how to ethically consume and use animal products. Indigenous communities have used animals for food, clothing, and tools for thousands of years. One thing I really admire about indigenous communities is the way they use not only animals but the earth. When indigenous communities take something from nature it doesn't even have to be animals they ask for permission and they have a plan for what they are using they don't just take without a plan for the thing they are taking which I think is what should be the president of how we should use animals and nature. Another thing I admire about indigenous communities is the way they use all of the animals when they kill an animal they have a plan for. They use the pelts for clothing, some for sacred clothing to reclaim practices they were legally banned from practicing. They use the bones for tools and jewelry for certain rituals and practices. Then they use the meat to feed their family/entire communities. My final point is that I think you are able to love animals and care for animals while still using animal products. I really hate the point where people say you wouldn't eat your pet would you. I understand the point that it's supposed to be a gotcha but I love animals. I love taking care of animals. I own multiple pets. I think if an animal lives a fulfilling life which I would consider them being able to partake in their natural habits while living under supervised care and love for and at the end of their life they are able to provide for the family that took care of them or provide for communities is a beautiful thing. I also want to add of course we are not going to eat dogs and cats because it would be unsafe because they have not been monitored and raised in a way that is safe to eat. I think it also a good example of cultural difference because in the U.S there is no safe way to purchase horse meat and eat it without risk because there are no place near us that monitor the way they raise horses for food but in France it is quite common to eat horse because they have the ability to have safe horse meat to eat. I also think if you can afford it there are multiple ways to get ethically made meats and animal products at least in the area I live in. Sadly I don't have that luxury because of my socioeconomic status but if I did I would love to raise my own food and not only meats but fruits and vegetable hopefully in the future. I think it's sad that in most places there are no ethical options for their food and I want change in our current food industry. But I truly believe that you can fully care for animals and consume animal products and the fact that you love animals provides a deeper, more beautiful meaning to eating and using these products because it means they are being utilized even after their death and being used to help keep people alive. I hope you don't take this as a mean or rude response. This is just something I feel very passionate about (obviously lol). Also if you want to talk about this more I would love to talk about it.

In my opinion, there is no ethical way of killing. Just because some animals are raised nicely, get to play outside and are treated well, doesn't make it ok because they are still destined to be slaughtered for human consumption. and honestly, to me, thats even more fucked up, because you made them trust you. Carl was named and given a home and (even though he was causing harm) was still slaughtered and eaten. How could you eat someone who has a name? A cow that you knew? I dont think a life is worth a 10-15 minute meal.

I think there is such a thing as ethically killing animals like when people put their pets down because they just can't function through life anymore with being in pain. I would rather put an animal down then wait while that animal is in pain while life takes its natural course. Ethical killing to me means being able to take the animal's life with the least amount of pain possible because I don't think there is any death without pain. And what I mean by there is no death without pain I am not only talking about the thing that is dying but everything around it. I wish it were possible for anything to die with pain accompanying it but that is just fantasy. When a person dies in their sleep they may have gone with little to no pain but that being said that does not mean pain is not accompanying it because you are not taking into account the pain that death brings to other people. There are multiple ways to slaughter animals that bring little to no pain and most of the time in the end that pain they feel that little pain before they feel nothing is not even close to pains they felt while living. I would consider an ethical slaughter of an animal is when they are rendered unconscious through natural processes depending on the animal (many animals go into “hibernation” when certain temperatures are reached like turtles or hampster”) and during this they feel nothing then slaughtered. Animal welfare scientists are currently trying to work on an anesthetic that would allow for safe consumption after being put in the body and I think hopefully in the near future that it can be used and that would also be considered ethical because it will guarantee no pain for the animal. Currently there are definitely options where certain animals can be slaughtered with no pain for example there is a company during thanksgiving they have people pre-order turkey for thanksgiving and when the time come after raising them they put them in truck that the temperature is slightly colder and they drive them around in the truck till they fall asleep because that just something they naturally do in a cold environment and when they are asleep that is when they slaughter them. Also it makes no sense that you completely disregard the fact that they have a good life because they are being raised to be eaten because what's the other option they are raised and die and guess what they are eaten by other animals besides humans. Carl was very close to the end of his life and he was able to provide for the people that took care of him his entire life. And when you boil it down to his life being a 15 minutes worth meal is just wrong because it completely disregards the work that 15 min meal is doing for the person that's eating. Also he didnt just get turned into 1 burger he probably turned into dozens of meals that provided nutrition and balance to the people eating that. Also think that you're also missing that fact of looking at all animals as if we provide nothing but harm to them. Ethically raised and taken care of animals rely heavily on the people that take care of them. There is a reason we can't and shouldn't release domesticated animals back into the world and I think using them as a way to fuel our bodies gives back to us after we have taken care of them. Animals dont feel trust they dont feel betryal when sent to slaughter all they feel is what you provided them which when taken care of ethically is their needs. Carl was given a very good life in the end he didn't feel hurt or betrayed by his end because he does not have the capabilities of feeling those and also why would he. He was old and in the end was able to provide for the people that took care of him. I know when I die I think it would be amazing to be able to provide something for the people around me even in death and even if that means a 15 minute meal that makes the people eating it feel good then I would be happy. I also think having a connection to what you are eating makes it even greater appreciation because you cared for it. It is like a garden where you raise the vegetables, take care of them, watch them grow and when the time is right you pick them, maybe sell them to other people to take back home to their families giving them some to feed their children. And also all life ends the same way everything has to die eventually carl was going to die, we are animals if carl had passed away in the pasture he would have been eaten by other animals his fate would have been the same but at least in the end he was able to provide, provide to people he had never even met reach and touch people that he didn't even know existed. And when you think about it he is able to live multitude of life after he died who knows how many people he gave himself too and each of those people have there own live and know they are taking them with him a little will stay in the them and little will continue to move around the world through bodily motions, parts sent to the ocean other maybe turned into rain. I would recommend looking into how indigenous communities view eating animals and how they see it as a way of continuing their lives and providing for the people that took care of them. I would recommend reading Seeing Ethical Meat Through an Indigenous Lens by Joshua Duvauchelle.

My point is that animals lives are not for human consumption. idc if they lived a "happy" life, you killed them before they got the chance to die on their own. most of the time, these animals are killed before even a year of life. what kind of life is that? idc if carl was old and was gonna die soon anyway. there is a way where we, as people, can get all of our nutrients without harm, so why wouldn't we do that? why does our pleasure and nutrients have to cost a sentient beings life? even if animals cant feel betrayal, dont you feel guilty?? i mean you raised them, took care of them, and ate them. i understand that you said eating them gives their death a purpose, but i just dont think its worth it. leaving it to nature would do the same, without you having to eat something that you loved and cared for. in my opinion, that kind of exploitation and EATING someone is its own kind of disrespect.

Omg fr. It makes me so sad how literally no one cares about the animal food industry. Coming from someone who LOVES meat btw but is trying to move away from it

Something i wanna mention: brushing aside people who defend the industry, it actually is difficult to move away from meat if you're raised with it. It tastes really good, and the same as any other type of food or eating behavior, its hard to change (BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE.)
Of course still talking about those who have a choice

I'm hoping we can one day have lab grown meat or something since thats ethical and seems to be making some good progress (its just expensive right now).

(((((((not to mention that a lot of people dont realize but the animal food industry actually does have some global warming effects tooand they're BAD)

by Mittens; ; Report

YES!! its also not just global warming, its the water and plastic consumption as well. also, a lot of fake "meat" is almost identical to real meat. it can get a little pricey, but i cant taste the difference. beef is the easiest to replicate, so its easier find good substitutes. chicken gets a little harder, but there are still some good ones out there. since you mentioned that you love the taste of meat, choosing one of those substitutes does satisfy the craving (if you have access to it ofc). i highly recommend impossible or beyond meat. even the impossible whopper from burger king is so good.
