At a Glance #1: Basic Fantasy RPG

Basic Fantasy RPG is an open source TTRPG built upon the modern d20 system most RPG fans are familiar with, but is tuned to recapture the feel of the RPGs of years past. That means you should be ready for fast and dangerous combat, monsters who can make you roll a new character in a blink of an eye, and deviously trapped dungeons with hoards of treasure; In other words, the kind of RPG session that's hard to find nowadays. The way RPGs are played nowadays is good, but the old school style just has a certain feel to it.

Basic Fantasy's ruleset plays similar enough to newer games, like D&D 5e (I would say 3.5e, but I'm not familiar enough to say). This means it has a lot of creature comforts, like using a grid for combat by default, ascending Armor Class, and classes and races being separate. A player familiar with modern D&D should be able to get up to speed with the game in short order.

It also benefits from it's old school side, which strips a lot of the crunch away. There aren't skill checks by default, only saving throws determined by class and level. Stat modifiers only go from zero to plus or minus three, making the spread less extreme. A lot of the systems are on the same level or often simpler than new games, with the one exception being a thief's skills, but that's due to having to make the player or GM roll percentile dice.

From my experience, I've gotten people who haven't played Basic Fantasy into playing the game pretty quickly, which is why it's one of my favorite OSR titles so far. It's a good mix of old school and new school, capturing the feel without having to sacrifice the creature comforts of today's games. It's simple to learn for both RPG veterans and new players alike, and best of all; The game is completely free.

The core book and all the supplements are free to download as PDFs, and a lot of the books can be bought physically with print on demand. The core Basic Fantasy book is $5.50 on Amazon, and the supplements are usually much cheaper. So you could get every player at the table a print copy of the rules for the same price as a single copy of another game book.

So, if any of that sounds interesting, you can give Basic Fantasy a look at their official website, https://www.basicfantasy.org . I personally really dig this game, so I hope some of you guys find it as cool as I do.
