Iberian wolves
I love wolves so why not to put some curiosities about them here and their situation on Spain right now?
This is going to be a resume but there are more points of view and diferent situations with the wolves in Spain as well as more information i didnt mention here to not make this blog too long.
Iberian wolfs are an endangered specie here in Spain.
Despite their poblational growing in the last 4 years, with 333 packs and more than 2.500 specimens they are facing problems like:
- Spanish goverment has allowed to hunt them again in 2025.
- They are facing a new problem with inbreeding, since most of the packs are isolated they doesn´t have any other wolves around but their own pack to reproduce, right now they are not seeing consequences but probably in the next years problems are going to start appearing.
(i know they have pack hierarchy but i didnt want to deepen into that)
Canis lupus signatus, is their name in latin
- Signatus mean ´´Marcado´´ ,marked, and it is because they have some vertical sports in they frontal legs, backs and tail.
- They can walk 100 km in one day only to find food
- They are a key piece to prevent ungulates diseases since they feed on Deers, Fallow deers and others. When hunting they try to choose the ones that are left behind and sometimes those are the ones who are weaker or sick.
- They can run up to 65 km/h
- And they are one of our apex predators in Spain
Some links (they are on spanish)
