the synthetic center

what is the "synthetic center"?

The synthetic center is the imagined entity that takes ownership of processes it neither understands nor controls.

Thoughts appear, decisions happen, actions unfold, and then a narrative claims authorship over the entire sequence.

We don't do this with digestion, sweating, breathing, or hormone regulation. Nobody says, "my sweating was a success today." We recognize these as complex biological processes unfolding on their own.

Yet when a thought appears or a decision happens, a fictional manager suddenly takes credit. As if there were a tiny version of you sitting inside the skull, directing neurons and consciously manufacturing thoughts.

There isn't.

The synthetic center is that imagined manager: a character constructed after the fact, claiming ownership over events no more controlled than respiration, digestion, or cell division.

Why does he exist? And why only for some things, and not others?
