Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind review ★★★★★

' Come back and make up a good-bye at least. Let's pretend we had one. '  

I went into this film expecting everything and nothing. I truly had no clue about it, the basis, not even the genre before I looked it up to watch it. I thought to myself, how could a romcom be a sci-fi? I expected something cheesy, maybe aliens? robots? but no. Instead, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is a deeply psychological film.  

Every scene conveys emotion, depth, and heart breaking realism, and the cinematography compliments that perfectly. the push and pull dynamic between Clem and Joel was heart breaking to watch. Attachment and avoidance do not go hand in hand, it will only end in heartbreak, in most cases at least. 

 Every actor gave a beautiful performance, Jim Careys serious yet still at times laughable role was mesmerising to watch, he and Winslet pull you in and keep you hooked. Side characters like Dunst, Ruffalo and Wood allow a breather from Joels collapsing mind, yet still create an enjoyable environment to watch, whether you agree with their actions or not.  

To erase the memories of someone you loved so deeply, while it may sound easy, those memories shape you. Those people you wish so deeply to forget envelop your mind, the hardest to forget are the ones you hold the closest. To forget them is to forget a version of yourself. Everyone wants to live in their eternal sunshine, but nothing in life is truly eternal, and that's the beauty of it all.  

I loved this film, it touched something tender inside of me, I no longer wish to forget, I want to hold the memories of those I've loved and let them shape me into the person I've become, because losing them is losing me. Your mind is what shapes you, the people who remain in there are still parts of who you once were or are.
