Kirby Anime Sub and Dub comparison episode 7

Dynablade!

If you've played Kirby Super Star, this episode's outcome shouldn't surprise you. If not, the legendary giant bird, Dynablade appears once every 100 years to lay eggs and then return to its slumber. Dynablade appears and goes Rodan on Pupupu Village. Dedede uses this chance to cook up a scheme to get rid of Kirby. He captures Kirby (luring him with food) and takes him to Dynablade's egg telling Kirby to eat the egg. Kirby being Kirby doesn't suspect a thing. When Fumu and Bun finally catches up, they just see egg shells in the Dynablade nest and Kirby nowhere to be seen. When Dynablade returns, it goes after Kirby thinking he ate her chick. The episode ends predictably when we find out the Dynablade chick actually hatched and Kirby was taking care of it and was even feeding it. And everyone was happy.

Fun episode of Kirby just being Kirby. Always hungry but good nature. He devoured an entire watermelon field causing the Cappy villagers to get pissed at him. He actually did try to eat the Dynablade egg. He lit a fire with the matches Dedede gave him, but it just cause the giant egg to hatch. We even see him dream about all the meals he could have made out of the giant egg. When Dynablade was attacking Kirby, he didn't use any powers against Dynablade. He used harmless headbutts and jumped on its wing.

There are several interesting points in this episode. This is another episode where we see all 3 of Kirby's animal friends, and the first time we hear Kine speak. His voice is just kinda dopey. I do like his Japanese voice more.

The other thing is that this episode plays out sorta like a homage to all the Japanese  giant monster movies. It starts off with an attack on the village where something mysterious just flies by and wrecks everything. We even see Parm (Sir Ebrum) with what appears to be a Geiger Counter for detecting radiation. And this is one of the interesting differences. In the Japanese version, he speculates whether it's a tornado. In the English dub, he says he doesn't detect any radiation. Now, I forgot to mention that I'm watching a fansub, so maybe some discrepancy with how they interpret the scene. In my opinion, the episode was definitely going for a giant monster homage. The 4Kids dub also seems to have interpreted that way. It has similarities to Rodan. This series does NOT shy away from movie homages or giant monsters, cause Mothra is literally in this series, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Either way, I'm making too big of a deal over a single line of dialog and a device in Parm's hand.

The episode does censor Officer Booker randomly firing his gun around trying to "defend" himself from a Dynablade attack. This is why I find the gun censorship kinda odd. One episode, 4Kids is fine with Dedede firing a gatling gun, the next episode, a scene with a hand gun was censored. This scene was played for laughs anyway.

They also made Meta Knight's advice kinda cryptic in the English dub. I'm not even sure what he's trying to say. The Japanese original just says Kirby has to deal with Dynablade cause it's his responsibility for eating the egg. Though we know Kirby didn't actually do it, so I'm not sure how this is a lesson for Kirby.
