Wrote a speech abt being a lesbian lolz

I gotta say a speech in my eng lang anyways here it is lolz (u guys think imma get a distinction? I js gotta remember it now....)

It’s 1921, homosexuality is illegal and now they’re trying to criminalise sexual acts between women – but it’s rejected. Not because of inclusivity and the government having a brain, but because why criminalise something that doesn’t exist? Of course, romantic relationships between women have always existed but it’s just some silly, platonic phase and they will eventually find themselves a husband (and if not, be sent to a mental asylum – as in the late 19^th century and early 20^th century this was seen as a mental illness) as women are incapable to find romance outside of being forced to cook and clean up after their abusive husband that will never see her as more than an incubator for his offspring.

Now, it’s 1975, society is slowly starting to acknowledge their existence but it’s extremely taboo. In an extremely religious and conforming society, the idea of women being in relationship would be unacceptable and shunned out of society. If you were to do the risk of coming out, be prepared to lose your friends and be unwelcomed in your local church. In fact, it was still seen as a mental illness – Casey Weitzman had to experience being a lesbian in the 70s and 80s, and she describes feeling that there was “something wrong” with her and even went to a therapist when she was 18 who told her to “keep it a secret” and “become straight”. This was a professional in psychology who told her to basically make her life a living hell.

And now it’s 2014, (yes we were all alive by then by the way), same-sex marriage is finally legal so you can finally marry your roommate and although there will always be the family members that don’t show up to the wedding and block you on Facebook, it is mainly accepted – that is as long as you don’t walk around in public holding hands as there will always be some creepy men that will either sexualise your relationship for his pleasure or commit a hate crime.

And finally, it’s 2026 again, being a lesbian is finally accepted in society, claiming to have a girlfriend or wife will finally not kill you out in public and on the internet (or so you think). People these days are far more supportive in our society – but are they supportive enough. Lesbians make up 1.3 % of UK’s population yet media still likes to claim that “everyone’s becoming gay all of a sudden”, there are 750,000 to a million lesbians yet there are people who still claim they don’t exist and that it’s a cry for attention.

‘It is much easier to be a lesbian’ is also a quote said by many straight women on the internet this day as well. It seems as in 2026, the world has become divided at it they love or hate lesbians. Many women on the internet complain about not being born attracted to women as they struggle to find a boyfriend that truly understands them the way another woman would.

So, has society truly become more open to homosexuality in women, or is there still far more to improve. It is literally very recently when lesbianism has been accepted – in our short lifetimes and most of us haven’t even become one and a half decades old yet. I, as a lesbian who has to live in this society, still receive death threats from men online, telling me I cannot be lesbian as women’s lives ‘revolve’ around men, and although I am gifted with an understanding family, when I went back into the closet I saw that this is also a façade after my dad would parade around in joy that I got out of the ‘gay phase’.

In reality, heterosexual couples don’t come out all the time to tell their family they like the opposite gender, so why do us lesbians need to? We may think that progress has helped us be balanced in society, but there are still people thinking that straight is the ‘default’ sexuality like as if being a lesbian is a DLC that 1% of women choose and select it, like a different theme pack for a game or dark mode for your computer.

So, tell me, are lesbians actually accepted into society in 2026?
