A huge problem in alt communities rn is that the fashion/culture has become something to prove, and post about, rather than something to be, and enjoy.
this discourse about being alt enough, goth enough, emo emough, gal enough, jirai enough, etc is pointless when its born out of a desire to be the number one alt person. And I personally feel as though social media has accelerated that performative-ness aspect.
its one thing to desire improvement so you feel more comfortable identifying with a subculture, but... at the end of the day, effort is where is counts always.
and dont get me started on that "naturally goth" thing that happened on twitter during the winter, it was blatant racism. POC alt people always get left behing in these convos!!
anways, i will always prioritize educating baby gals and baby jirais instead of bullying; sending all the links and tuts so that they can find out what works for them. i js hope they can also be open to learning/criticism from vets!
people just dont wanna research anymore. Maybe I'm a nerd, but literally all I would do as a kid was dream of being a pastel goth and doing makeup, buying cool clothes. I learned so much about the ins and outs of the community from the internet. These days, so many posers (not larpers, they're called posers) will just look at one TikTok and call it a day. Not every source is accurate, true, or final. For any alt subcultures, the most important things will be visuals and values. How to look and what is important!!!
Long story short, find a subculture that enamores you and feels like home. Jirai makes me feel so perfect, and it's just so right for me. I like other styles too, so I dont have to limit myself to one thing. Life is short, and labels can be restricting instead of defining, so just do your own damn thing!!!
