Because often what makes a dream funny for me when I wake up is how many things "Just made sense" in-dream.
Like, one of the funniest dreams I've ever had was one where I met an old friend of mine's older cousin (He does have an older cousin, said older cousin was not the dream one) who was fidgeting with one of those cat bell ball toys the way one does with a coin. About two minutes into knowing him he asked me if I wanted to take over the world and install a communist regime with him, and so we did. But the meaning "communism" had in this world apparently just entailed an absurdly high amount of barbershops everywhere and carriages becoming a thing again, I did not know that in-dream until we had taken over the world already yet I inmediately accepted it. In-dream cousin was also emo, which is not plot relevant but it was a big part of his character.
It's a situation where it's just not nearly as funny if you weren't the one who dreamt it imo. Because you didn't have the experience of "living" through it and treating every part of it as normal enough, y'know? So I could just tell you "Oh I dreamt about a dolphin being my cashier at aldi's, there's no aldi's where I live but this was one but with a walmart logo and it was called walmart but it was an aldi's. And the dolphin told me to speak English or go back to my country but it said so in Spanish because the whole dream was in Spanish and I knew the dolphin was Peruvian but I couldn't tell you how I knew, it never told me it was," and that's probably about as funny as what I said last paragraph for everyone except for me, who actually "experienced" getting asked by some unknown emo if I wanted to take over the world and accepting with no hesitation.
