finally writing here again bc this film was just THAT GOOD
i watched before sunset today while smoking a lomboy cig and eating a bowl of cut up mango and orange slices and drinking a big ass iced coffee at 4 pm so maybe that influenced my mood but this film had me smiling the whole time i swear.. something about it is so hopeful and i never thought that watching two people walk around and have a conversation could be so engaging! even though the theme of this film is about getting older and a bit jaded and looking back on memories of a younger and more hopeful version of yourself, it's still full of hope imo. i love it more than before sunrise but thats prob bc i hated jesse and i watched it a year ago lol
the subtleties in jesse and celine's interactions like how they try to sneak glances at each other when the other isn't looking or how jesse tries to press against celine on the bench or put his arm around her whenever he can is so natural and familiar to me bc i've definitely seen that before in so many people lol. i think if i saw this film earlier i might have actually gotten into a relationship with someone i knew ☠
their first interactions at the beginning of the film where they act like they've known each other their whole lives even though they've only met once are just so exciting and i feel like you can see them try to hide their excitement and interest in each other while still trying to learn about what's changed in their lives. it's like the energy they had from their first meeting never died, even though the years changed the tone a bit, and as the day goes on you can see the changes in their lives start to grow more apparent in how they talk about things like love and the future until it explodes in celine's monologue in the car, but even that didn't manage to spoil the mood. it felt so cathartic and i still couldn't stop smiling watching it! like crying in your friend's arms.
ITS JUST A REALLY GOOD FILM WOW EVERYONE WATCH BEFORE SUNSET (2004) DIRECTED BY RICHARD LINKLATER STARRING ETHAN HAWKE AND JULIE DELPY
