i don't think anyone can imagine how much i was fawning over an ipod classic for over a year now. but am i willing to pay 50-100+ us dollars for a device that is at least 15 years old (or a chinese replica for the same price)? (i would if i wasn't stingy and too self aware about the overconsumption aspect of this trend)
not when i have a perfectly fine piece of technology that can play music just the same!

(an old photo from someone's #qualitytumblr blog back from 2012 showcasing this very thing, for non-believers 🙄🙄)
prehistory: i got an iphone 5 almost 2 years ago purely to take photos on it. i love the grainy quality, i love how it doesn't post-process my pics and make my face grey & basically technology peaked in 2012. i also use it as a burner phone for when i need it (once every 2-3 months), but it had an awful battery and could only last for 2 hours max.

so i mostly just used it for aesthetic purposes ・ ༝ ・
buttttt it all changed when i saw some random man on youtube use his iphone 4 as a music player. in the light of russian government censoring a lot of songs, many people opted to go back to their roots - storing their music locally. ipods already got really expensive on the pre-owned market due to the spike in popularity. and u could say 'but why not use ur main phone/pc/whatever to listen to music?? ' and would be right, but where's the fun in that? and as for me, i already had a second phone & wanted to give it more purpose to use it more often ˙𐃷˙
so the first thing i did was change the battery. old iphones are really easy to repair - it was my first time even opening up a phone, let alone stirring up its insides, but i think i did a decent job. all in all it took me around 10 minutes
also, it was a bizzare feeling seeing the phone screen all lit up while mostly disconnected from the rest of its body for the first time ever lol

i can't really tell if the battery change did something since i haven't really tested it yet. the battery it had before was also relatively new (2024). but i can say that - it was lying around in plane mode, no wifi for around 5 days and it only lost 1% of the charge! but of course when u use the phone the battery drains almost just as fast as it did before. so i guess it isn't the main problem after all :c
then it took me some days to mentally prepare for having to scour the great torrent seas for my favourite albums, but i did it after all :p still not very much done, but a few albums is a good start
had to fiddle a little with audio formats since apple only accepts their own format on itunes which is alac (their analog of flac)
