Since early 2024, I’ve been off almost every single social media. And dude… THAT SHIT IS WEIRD!! It was a progressive thing where I started out limiting my screen time, then I deleted each app one at a time. It was only recently that I actually deleted each of these accounts because I finally lost my attachment to old posts on them.
On one hand, it’s REALLY refreshing to not get other people’s opinions before you can form your own. Like, being online and sorta trying to appeal to a billion randos while also being quirky enough to be an independent person is EXHAUSTING. I’ve been online for like, 15 years and it feels like that one Frank Sinatra song with how many personalities I’ve pretended I had. That’s definitely not an everyone problem, but it was a BIG me problem. For the first time in a really long time, I feel like I’ve been me for an extended period of time instead of unwillingly trend-hopping traits and characteristics like an indecisive Sims player.
The downside is that I feel VERY out of touch. There is a very visible correlation between when I got rid of most socials and when I lost a lot of friends. Half the time, I have almost no idea what my peers are talking about when they reference certain memes, viral songs, or trendy memes. Being online sometimes made me feel like I had to tolerate being around people I just didn’t like, and that immediately translated into real life for stupid reasons. But anyways, it’s genuinely like a completely different dialect.
As of today, the only socials I have are this and Pinterest. I’m a big fan of SpaceHey because I really only use the browser version and this site has no creepy and invasive algorithm, which limits how regularly I use it. And I’m honestly on my last nerve with Pinterest. Hate everyone on there, but that’s another blog for another day.
There is no lesson to this post, I’m just yapping.
