I've hated Orochimaru with burning passion for YEARS and throughout those years, I've seen plenty of Orochimaru lovers along the way and I'm really wondering like... WHY???
I've never been able to interpret Orochimaru as anything more than a pedophile and groomer, as a little kid and even now, and yet I see multiple people defending him as a "grossly misunderstood character"
I will admit, I haven't actually done a deep dive as to what these people are talking about because my belief has been so strong as how he sucks and is a pedophile. On the other hand... he's an older scientist who's evil/morally grey with black hair and makeup...
he's kinda hot
So I GUESSSS I'm open to not hating anymore but I need some ROCK, LIKE FUCKING DIAMOND SOLID EVIDENCE that this bum's actually worth liking as a character

I'll get this out of the way first: I can't speak for your friend of course, and I'm also not very familiar with Orochimaru's actions beyond a surface level understanding (I haven't actually watched/read much of Naruto)
Those who like a problematic character as a character appreciate their complexity, depth, and thought-provoking nature. Those who like a problematic character as a means are indulging in taboos in a way that won't hurt anyone in real life. Out of these two, the former is the most likely to defend characters who are awful people
I'm firmly in the latter camp and have no interest in justifying my problematic fave's actions :3 For example, I think Naoya from JJK is a horrible person who I would be disgusted by and would never like in real life, and he's still my favourite character! Why? Because he's like a horrible person *doll* I can play with that doesn't actually hurt anyone. I don't know, maybe your friend feels the same way about Orochimaru

I Think It’s In The Same Vein On Why People Like Jimmy From Mouthwashing ,Theyre Both Complex And Interesting Characters .But As To Why People Like Them I Feel Like Thats More Nuance ,Obviously I Don’t Condone Any Of These Characters Actions ,Personally I Don’t Even Find Them Appealing Because Of Said Actions .
But I Feel Like You Can Like A Problematic Character As Long As You Don’t Defend Their Actions Or Even Outright Justify It .I Have A Few Gripes On Orochimarus Handling In The Show ,I Don’t Believe He Should’ve Been Forgiven Right Away Especially After Eveyrthing Hes Done But Thats A Whole Other Topic
