offshore oil rigs (what the function of certain things are and such!)

An offshore oil rig doesnt work like an onshore one, its built differently and works much differently. An offshore oil rig has a deck, derrick, helipad, living quarters, pontoons, flareboom/flare, andĀ marine control

A deck is well,, the deck of an oil rig, where crates, shipping containers, spare parts and such are kept, nothing that interesting.

A derrick is the main drill, its where the drill is maintained and used for drilling, they typically flush the drill with something thats called 'mud', it's not the typical mud you'd think of, its full of chemicals made to clean and flush out the drill and make sure it doesnt overheat.

A helipad is well, the helipad, where the helicopter is kept, flying people off and on the rig.

A living quarter is where the people sleep, stay when they aren't working, eat, and such, there can be 100-200 people on an offshore oil rig at once so its important to have living quarters, the helicopter cannae fly people around everyday, it'd take up too much fuel and it'd waste lots of time because the next day they'd have to get back to the oil rig.

A pontoon is what keeps an offshore oil rig afloat in the sea, att least the semi-moveable ones. They're filled up with water when the oil rig needs to stay in one spot to drill, and once the drilling is done, they're emptied so the oil rig can be moved around but this is only for the semi-moveable ones.

The flareboom/flare is where gas and chemicals that aren't wanted on the rig go, they go there and get set on fire so they easily disappear, they're also used to keep the pressure on an oil rig stable.

The marine control is where all the controls to the oil rig are, where recordings are kept, where the control to the pontoons are and such.

There's also lots of important jobs on an offshore oil rig :
Deckhand, the main sort of work, they make sure the deck is clean(Sorta) and move heavy things around
Technician, they work to keep theĀ generators and lights on.
Driller, they work with the drill, making sure it's working and they make sure it doesn't break.
Chef, they cook the food for the others,, that was pretty clear, eh?
Diver/saturation diver, they work to maintain the outside of an oilrig, making repairs on the oil rig under water.
Theres of course more but i'm way too lazy to write more.

I hope you enjoyed reading this and i hope you enjoyed learning about offshore oil rigs! They're much more complicated than what i explained here so i recommend watching a video about them if you enjoyed this!
