"Moody Teenager" Stereotype

I don't know if I'm biased, but I'm seriously tired of every middle aged writer and director creating a character who just so happens to be a teenager... and then making them just a charicature. No real depth, just addicted to their phone, always having a problem with their parents, etcetera etcetera. And honestly, I'm exhausted. For more reasons than just it's overdone.

I'm not saying that we (teens) aren't generally more emotional and melodramatic, because we can be. It's part of the hormones and what have you. But a lot of people develop their mental health issues during their teenage years. Now, I haven't done any beforehand research on this, but I know from experience that everything that's ever truly been wrong with me, was pushed to the side as just "being a teenager." I wasn't diagnosed with depression and anxiety until I was ~14, which was only over a year ago now--for reference, I'd been having symptoms for like 4 or 5 years.

But here's my problem with the stereotype. I really, really hate how it's affected the way people see teenagers and preteens with mental health issues that seriously need to be addressed. There are countless stories from teenage girls who were going through something emotionally traumatic, but their struggles were shot down, and they were asked the effervescent and frankly annoying question, "Are you sure you're not just on your period?" But I digress.

I just really would like to know how much this stereotype has costed families, in terms of funeral expenses. Hopefully you can put the pieces together there. I know personally that I really wished I had someone to understand me back when I was unmedicated, but you know what I got from the adults around me? Nothing. Empty words of comfort, and of course, the unavoidable, "You're just a teenager."

Maybe I'm reading too deep into this, but I wouldn't be surprised if this archetype was a reason why teenagers aren't taken seriously when they say they may have depression or anxiety, etc. And that is probably an direct result of the rising suicide rate.

Okay. Whatever. Adults can keep writing their silly little shows with their silly little harmful stereotypes, and I don't know what I'm talking about cuz I'm just a kid, right? Yeah.

A lot teenagers behave this way bc 1. mood swings are a symptom of puberty, which is completely normal and shouldn't be vilified like this and 2. around this age they're being expected to behave like adults while also being treated like kids and disrespected by everyone around them. It's the age where you should be figuring out who you are and your place in the world, but suddenly there's this massive amount of pressure on you to grow up, and yet you're constantly infantilised and not trusted with any real responsibility. Really a worst of both worlds kind of situation.
