Dante and Edward Elric are both really determined to preserve human life/ it's a priority for them. For example Ed and Al not wanting to kill Nina nor cause unnecessary deaths. Similar to how Dante doesn't want to cause unnecessary deaths either, I mean his job is literally hunting demons posing threats to humanity. I think they would get along pretty well. Additionally, they both caused some kind of harm to their brothers.
During the human transmutation to bring back their mother, Al lost his body in the process and Ed blames himself for it, only being able to bind his soul to a suit of armor. Dante also blames himself for the loss of his brother, Vergil. While it's mainly Vergil's own fault, Dante still feels guilty in the end for not being able to save his brother, losing the only family he had left. It’s two sides of the spectrum of brothers feeling guilty for what happened to their siblings The only thing is that Ed has Al (though without a physical body) but Dante, for a long period of time, wasn’t aware of where Vergil was.
Their preference for humanity drives them both. In FMA people are always in awe of Ed when they heard he could do human transmutation, but it’s his biggest regret because of what happened to Al. Dante, who is so tied to his human side, but rejects his demonic side because of Dante's character, especially on visions of v, there’s an emphasis on what makes him different from Vergil because he chooses to embrace his human side rather than reject it like Vergil did.
What hurts is that Ed and Al are always together and have been through everything together but Dante and Vergil have been separated for a large majority of their lives. That's I think a big difference between Ed and Dante but they still have the struggle mentioned before, where they lost family. They have both lost their mothers, both left without biological family and left to fend on their own. Absent fathers who weren't there for their childhood. While Ed and Al found out about their father, Ed is at least not so willing to accept him. Ed has family like relationships with the Rockbells and develops friendships and trust with those he has met throughout his journey. Dante has had a similar familial relationship with Nell Goldstein and now Nero a biological family connection (now Vergil too that he's back), and his friends that he's made along his life, Lady and Trish etc.
Brothers,
Dante didn't even hesitate going down to Hell with Vergil, he loves his brother so much it makes my heart hurt. Ed and Al are brothers through everything, thick and thin, something Dante has lacked with his brother. </3
I feel if they did meet in person they wouldn’t share much, but there’s this understanding of what happened and it would be when one of them makes a comment that might be in relation to losing someone which makes the other tense up or become more closed up and the other acknowledges and decides not to push. But there’s a change in the way they interact because they are aware of sharing similar losses and having the same moral struggles.
