I don’t think using AI diminishes creativity, since there is always a human element involved. I don’t understand what the difference is between someone using AI and someone who has the financial means to pay for a ghostwriter, a producer, or a studio where their voice is enhanced. Why would that artist deserve more credit than someone who uses AI for something very specific? For example, if someone is a good composer and vocalist but can’t write lyrics, why would it be a problem to use AI to fill that gap? Or if someone writes and composes very well but doesn’t have a strong enough voice, what’s the issue with generating a more accurate one? On the contrary, I think AI levels the playing field. Many people don’t have the financial means to get support from others in their creative projects, even though they need it. Why would they be less legitimate than those who can afford these services?
I get the impression that what fundamentally bothers people is that everyone can now access a form of artistic creation, while many still believe it should remain a closed field reserved for the most “deserving.” But what does merit even mean when you’re competing with people who have far more advantages than you in terms of social environment, financial means, or cultural capital?
Process over result.
Why don’t I personally use AI? It’s simple: for me, the process matters more than the result. I love creating. I can’t live without it. I started making music because I had things to say. I’ve always loved writing and even studied it and earned a degree in French literature, alongside my audiovisual studies. What I like most is performing my songs and expressing my emotions through them. The result doesn’t matter much to me, I don’t dwell on what I’ve finished and quickly move on to something else.
Impostor syndrome.
To be honest, as someone who constantly feels out of place and illegitimate, I also need to feel legitimate. I need to tell myself that I’ve done everything from A to Z, not just in my art, but in life in general. I find it very hard to delegate.
Voilà, that’s a short reflection on my current position. I’d be genuinely interested to hear other perspectives, beyond the hostility that sometimes comes from anti-AI discussions.
