URGENT bad habit

SPOILER: this post includes sh. You were warned.

Ever since I started going to kindergarten my nail biting habit has never stopped. There were times when I managed it better (during summer break) but then fell off even worse.

I am now 22 and it hit to a point where it is not just a bad habit but actual sh.

Recently realized i do this as coping mechanism from stress but not in a healthy way. My goal is to make it hurt, no matter how. Right now it's worse than ever, I often expose the part of the nail where it's supposed to grow (yes the opposite end) to the point of exposing flesh, literally making a hole in that area. The area hurts for about a day, then i do it again. The nail is unrecognizable but also heals extremely fast.

Yes I have put plaster on my thumb when it hurt to avoid worse damage. However I cannot keep it hidden at all times but even if i did, i'd start going for another nail.

Some of my nails are still in a great shape from last year but that makes one of them suffer for the sake of keeping the rest alive.

I would like to ask for an advice on how to avoid this habit, Simple tricks won't work, I need something physically stimulating.

btw I don't have any other bad habits that affect me physically. i don't smoke or drink or do the traditional sh. I don't take any pills, this is my only way of coping with stress. I hope this is okay to post.

I feel you. Im 18 and my nails look like shit too. My parents would constantly tell me to stop but I cant.

I think probably the best way to stop biting your nails is to:

- keep yourself busy (do something involving your hands, like playing games)
- note down the number of times you’ve bitten your nails and try to stay below a limit
- keep yourself relaxed (idk i usually bite my nails when im bored or stressed)

I hope the best for you

thank you for the tips. i have tried playing games but it didn't work well for me, but during summer i move a lot and keep my mind busy so that works somehow. i was thinking if i started going to the gym or jst work out in general that would somewhat help?

also due to me being huge overthinker it's difficult to keep myself relaxed. i have not found a way how to calm myself down that's probably why nail biting's become such a huge problem for me:) I will still try my best to find something and I hope u will get better at controlling it too
