*disclaimer* its okay if you like these animes/animation styles, this is just my observations and opinions

obviously not all anime but in the past decade ive noticed an uptick in modern anime looking really...rounded? everything looks very soft and the colouring/highlights make things look like soft plastic and not shiny.
for example, heres fire force. the manga is gorgeous, but the anime looks flat, rounded and almost kid like, none of this grit that the actual art has. arthurs hair looks almost chewable based on the round white highlights. like a beach ball or something.

---
heres another example from the magic night rayearth reboot to show its not just happening in shonen:

the reboot makes everything look flat and plastic despite the highlights whereas the first image of the og makes them look vibrant and silky/metallic. something about the reboot makes everything look cheap.
not saying there isn't room for this look/style but i wonder if its laziness for faster output from higher-ups rushing the animators and making every "cute" looking to appeal to mass audiences. in the case of rayearth this is a shame because the original looked incredible but the 2026 reboot looks worse imo, like it was made at the start of anime using digital animation, not decades later after tons of advancements.

idk man, just cause newer anime looks flasher doesn't mean the new animation is actually done well.
idk where im going with this other than its something that has been lowkey bothering me for a little while. anyone else have this issue?

yeah i mean i think it's just that as time went on anime became super huge even in the west and in europe so the demand for new series and shit rocketed, making shortcuts something to be seen in animation. the only thing is that anime already uses a lot of shortcuts to begin with, the details are simplified and the animation is often synthesized in short frames that repeat, so bumping up these factors up makes the product just look cheap, and that's because it is.
yeah like i couldnt help but think that a lot of 90s anime cut tons of corners cause it was 10x more labour intensive and they had also some type of tight-ish deadline. like akira for example had a a lot of scenes that were still images with some type of minimal sfx that really gave it life. but its not just the animation but the artwork looks off too. its also upsetting to see fans pressure studios into putting things out faster but expecting it to be good quality in such a short turnaround. really sucks.
