Horror media

Does anyone else think horror media is becoming less and less creative?

Horror doesn't have to be terrifying to be good, this is something we've seen in a lot of popular shows like Hannibal, Dexter or The Walking Dead (of course, they have their fearful or suspenseful moments.) Recently I've noticed a large influx of just downright horrible work, with a few exceptions like last year's Sinners, for example. A lot of it is just getting repetitive. Similar plots, similar monsters or killers, nothing worth noting, and they use heavy amounts of gore to try and cover all up.

Urban legends seem to have also gone down the drain as well, sadly. We used to have stuff like Creepy PastaSCP, & Black Mesa. Sure, a lot of the content was written by 12 year olds at the time, but it was still fun and creative! Now a lot of what I've seen is just AI generated slop, with art stolen from small creators. Kinda sad to see what that little corner of the internet has become.

I will say though, horror games look like they're thriving as usual.

My question is why?

Honestly, I can't even say when I began to notice a shift in the horror community. It may have been around 2019-2020 when COVID was at large... Although you'd think being trapped inside, alone with your thoughts and the internet would actually cause some sparks of imagination.

However it could also have something to do with the rise in AI usage, as I mentioned before with Urban legends.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the "horror games are thriving" sentiment, I believe now especially horror games arent doing very well, sure maybe they are becoming more popular and industrialized compared to like 20 years ago but all of them have lost their spark and uniqueness. between shitty 2 hour long puppet combo rip off games where you work at a gas station, boring aesthetic slop games like poppy's playtime, or simply horror games that should have ended a while ago but are still being milked for cash (such as FnaF: secret of the mimic), i'd say the horror game market is at at an all time low
