I am a huge Ben Johnston fan; I've been listening to his stuff since I was in middle school, and I still consider him one of my top composers of all time. Despite this, though, there was a lot about his music structurally that I still didn't really understand. I've been spending some time recently to properly analyze his music, mainly focusing on the 7th and 10th string quartets.
It wasn't until just today, though, that I finally discovered a whole book about his music! Its simply called The Music of Ben Johnston by Heidi Von Gunden, and I only saw it referenced from a paper written on his 6th string quartet. It even comes with a foreword from John Cage, one of Johnston's mentors, and its been so nice looking through it!! I'm hoping it'll help me understand the first movement of the 7th string quartet better, as its structure is still eluding me even after all this analysis.
