People seem to feel really strongly about how a random indie developer who produces a fun revival site as a side gig runs his project for people who also do not support the site financially.
The site is free, I don't think anyone has any obligation to fund the project. However, maybe An would have an easier time implementing and running the site the way you imagine he should be if he actually had the spare funds and resources to manage such an undertaking. To me, it really reeks of a kind of modern neoliberal entitlement. These are truly first-world problems.
Plus, maybe An is more likely to listen to financial supporters? Though, as someone who has actually given money to the project, I'd honestly prefer if they focused more on neat features and quality-of-life changes rather than really going heavy on the moderation like a lot of people seem to think would be wise.
As an aside, and maybe this makes me a ""gatekeeper"", but besides making it so that bots shouldn't join en masse, it also will hopefully stop lots of TikTok kids from seeing a TikTok about this place, joining as something of a trend, then all leaving because they find out that they don't actually like the feel of the old net.
Ultimately, An is probably right that this change will make, or at least could make, the community into a closer-knit one.
