Privacy is a thing that many Asian parents don't often respect, because they simply think you are hiding something. As a person who grew up in a brown AND Muslim household as a WOMAN, you can already understand my pain. I didn't have my own room till 14, yes, 14! I slept with my parents which is common in brown households, until my brother moved out for college. Whenever I was on my laptop, they would randomly come in my room, and run as fast as they could to see what was on my laptop. They would never knock, they would randomly barge in and start snooping around my room. They rarely let me invite my friends, and only let me when they were in the house (still rarely). If I did, they would randomly barge in and sit with us for 1 hour (at least) to snoop in our conversations and stand behind the door listening to what I was talking with my friends. They never let me have guy friends but I did have them secretly. They didn't let me wear t shirts, yes, t shirts. All my friends were wearing crop tops while I was not even allowed to wear jeans and t shirt. This led to me having no trust in them, and not telling them a single bit of my life. If you are a parent, please respect your child's privacy, they are DEFINITELY NOT doing something bad unless they have a brain size of a nut. You can maintain boundaries, but you cannot know every single part of their life. It's okay if they don't tell something to you, you have to protect them, you don't have to steal their life! Just know that your child is a whole different person. And did any of your parents tell EVERY SINGLE PART of their life? of course not! It's totally okay for your child to keep secrets, it's a part of being human! CHEERIOS!
Privacy, a word that doesn't exist in Asian parents' dictionary nor their world.
