Towards Confessionals

Rain on iron. Rust beneath the palms.

The way you press a bruise to feel its border-

Leaned into, until the edges clarify,

Until the ache becomes a kind of order.

Something on the other side grew still.

Doors parted not as doors but as flesh gives,

Church dividing at its dark and patient middle,

Swallowing the way deep water swallows lives.

Nave of ribs. Vaulting white and curved.

Columns rising vertebrate from cold stone floors.

Walked the tongue. Felt the gullet seal.

Candleflames bent inward as he passed,

Congregation turning, face by worn face-

Coat smoothed. Expression held. Fear kept below the keel.

Choir loft a second throat above.

Beast breathing with a low and patient will.

Looked upward once. Did not look up again.

Organ breathed. Organ breathed. Thumb pressed to sternum.

kyrie- voices rising- eleison- Lord, sustain-

Windows blazing violet, bruise-green, red.

Saints watching from the inside of a skin.

Stood in the lung. The beating, breathing lung.

Sacred things beginning their descent.

Agnus Dei- Lamb of God- qui tollis- struck the chest three times and felt the static spread, and spread.

Chalice raised.

A lidless eye.

Host on the tongue.

Wine going down blood-dark and cold.

Gripped the rail-

Knuckles blanched-

Above, every rib

Pressing down-

Liturgy concluded.

Rose. Smoothed the coat.

Rain at the door. Congregation filing, composed, released.

Beast exhaled. Grew still.

he'd only poured the wine.

I do paint but generally it's separate to my writing, i was thinking of making a blog with some of my art, though it's been a long time since i painted "seriously" as in, for galleries or competitions.

Thats so intrresting which one of ur writings was influnced by the jaw of st anthony, id love to read it with that context in mind. Catqcomb saints have influenced my illsutration .

The connection between the remaina of christain matryrs and the post-refotmation catholic church quite tender and sweet

As well nostaligic because growing up each year my mam would bring me to visit st valentines bones and write a .essage to him.

i've not posted what i wrote about st anthony, maybe one day, i don't think it's up to standard at the moment.

religious history is a huuge interest to me, early christianity and patristic readings have really absorbed my time recently. i wish i lived somewhere that kept reliquaries, one day i'll travel and have that fulfilled.

I hope u do bc there is a powerful energy. Id love to see a full body bc they are truly magnificant creations emcompassing the actal matryrs who were unappreciated and suffered in their time as well as this extravagant display of decoration with jewel and fabric. Utterly transformed and a symbol of recovery post reformation is soo meaningful. (Sorry talking about this no one irl talk about this stuff... lol)

This piece is absolutely beautiful, I had such vivid images in my head as I read it. The music and layout you chose really helped amplify the emotions, too. I hope my own writing can one day evoke what I felt when I read yours<3
