Kicking Myself Right Now

In january, I played a couple of shows with a band called "Cyxez" (pronounced like "sixes") They're sort of a midwest emo but also kinda metalish band. The songs were all really cool, and it was a blast. About a week before the shows were supposed to happen my main amp that I use started giving me some issues, so I ended up switching to my backup, which is an old Roland Jazz chorus (JC-120). For non audio nerds, the amp is like the king of pristine clean. It's typical only use is clean. The song "A Forest" by The Cure is a great showcase of what it sounds like. It's extremely bright, and most heavy sounds you get from it end up sounding like someone shoving an ice pick in your ears. To offset the harsh brightness, and general sterileness, I had some absolutely wacky EQ going on, along with a rigamarole of effects. I was extremely proud of how it sounded, it was a monstrous wall of sound that just like hit you right in the gut. It was sort of smashing pumpkins or radiohead-esque, but there was something about it that was it's own thing entirely. My problem is: I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO RECREATE IT. I only did the two shows as a fill so I didn't feel the need to backup or write down my complicated signal chain.

I've tried to recreate it, but I haven't really captured the magic again, I'm going to try at it again tomorrow with a fresh set of ears, If anyone is interested in audio demos I'll try to post them. Anyways I'm done ranting, here's sort of what my signal chain was, maybe it will inspire someone!

It went something like this:

Schecter DJ-Ahba with emg81 pickups:

Friedman BE-OD Deluxe, Not sure on the eq settings, or what channel, I used it for some songs, but not on others.

the rest of the effects are all digital effects from the Neural DSP Nano Cortex:

Noise gate? (Most likley)

Rat Pedal (This I'm 100% on, I am a huge Rat fan and use it all the time.)

Tube amp capture (I think it was some sort of orange amp, likely clean or edge of breakup, to give the sterile preamp of the JC-120 some warmth and compression)

Slight Slapback delay (I'm pretty sure I most likely did this, since I was the only guitar I wanted to sound super full)

Reverb (this one doesn't really matter, I think I used the mind hall reverb, which is based on the Lexicon 224 reverb)

Mic: Sennheiser e609 Silver (For the one show, it was in a medium sized theater, so I was mic'd up with a Sennheiser e609 Silver, a plexiglass shield was placed in front of my amp by the soundman. most of my volume was coming through the stage monitors rather than the amp itself.)
