This is my take on people joining alternative subculture like goth, emo, scene, gyaru, etc.
I heard many people talking about "wanting to be alt", but at the same time, some of them were afraid of getting judged.
Reminder: I do not support judging people based on their appearance or fashion style, neither do you as a person/people. I'm only stating my opinion/takeAnyways, We will understand what is an alternative subculture and their fashion. For starters Alternative subcultures or Alt (in abbreviation simply) are smaller groups of people who exist outside of the popular and mainstream culture that embrace the idea of non-comformity, self-expression of one's identity, individuality and oppose main society's expectation and norm. Their fashion is supposedly more unique than basic everyday fashion. My idea was that alt fashion isn't supposed to be appealing and good-looking, it is a statement. Their outfit were mainly worn to make a statement about their political identity and their way of self-expressing, not to please people's eyes only. Your lifestyle, philosophical viewpoint and political ideology had to be your main aspects before fashion.
Specifically, when opposing social norms, there's always going to be a certain chance you'll get judged by some people. But not all of those normies will judge you.
I actually minded when you feel judged and hated by people because of how you dressed because it's dumb to hated on someone outfits, but you do realised goths, emo and punk etc, were brutally judged by many people, yet they keep being themselves.
Of course, alt individuals don't like being judged. Nobody like them deserved it. It's just that nobody understands the fact that alt individuals gets so many complains and eyeing by the normals. For example, emos get hated in recent years by mainly adults who got a wrong on the subculture itself as it seemed to glorify negativity and mental illess. Many others thinks it sounds dramatic and just embraces weakness while other made up some stereotypes about them. I saw many online content, dedecated to hating on these people, which is horrendous already, like mocking their type of music (emotional hardcore, from which, emo gets their name), mocking the way they look and act and so on.
But what they didn't realised was that, they were proving the purpose of being alt and being emo. You don't have to give a fuck about what expectation people give to you, you don't need to listen their mockery and judgement. You don't follow their harmful laws that go against human rights.
To conclude, the more you get judged, the more likely you considered to be alternative. You can't be non-conformist and be openedly afraid of what people thought of you. If you want to be alt but is highly affected by normies' expectation, it's more susceptible for your alt lifestyle to be a phase, unless you built the courage to become happy with yourself and express your non-conformist mindset with your type of fashion.
