Hot rage-bait take on Twenty-One Pilots

The sample from Drag Path used by many thousands of TikTok users in content sharing their traumatic life-events is the only part of the song I actually like. To me, it's the only part of the song that they sunk any real emotion in. Weirdly, it's almost like the genre of the song changed completely in that one part.

I've seen some users say that Twenty-One Pilots is a Christian band and that the song is about Jesus and being saved, but I am too lazy and uninterested to google any more information on this. If it's true, it wouldn't surprise or outrage me because California still has a large and powerful evangelical presence and they do (very, very occasionally) produce works of real art. Case in point, Evanescence (not a Christian band, but intended to be one by two original members).

For all this "millennial nostalgia" revival of specifically post-recession indie hipster fashion, "music", and other crap, the reality for me, personally, is that sad music from around that time period is significantly more reflective of my experiences because the worst years of my life were the four since graduating high school.

I haven't heard the song and haven't seen the tiktoks you're referencing but top don't make strictly christian music. Haven't been actually for ages I feel like. The newest album I listened to by them is Clancy where it's mostly (typical for them) dealing with life while having anxiety and depression. (not only that but I digress). And referencing whatever fictional worldbuilding they came up with.
I am sure there are references to religion here and there like there always been. (depending on the song). But whenever fans point out that they're actually a christian band it makes me feel like they're dumbing it down more often than not. I feel like these songs are always partially about religion and partially whatever Tyler is going through and how he's navigating that. Not *just* about Jesus.

You're absolutely right. Americans are notorious bad when it comes to media literacy, or literacy in general, so they like to come up with their own half-baked theories and explanations for things. That's how we ended up with parents complaining that playing vinyl records backwards summoned demons.
