for a long time i struggled with procrastination while studying or trying to focus on something important. sometimes it wasn’t that i didn’t want to do the task, it was more that strange feeling of being alone with it. when there’s no structure or presence around you, it’s very easy to drift away, open another tab, or postpone things.
something that helps me a lot with this is something called body doubling, the idea that simply having another person present while you work can make it easier to stay focused. they don’t have to be helping you or even talking to you, they’re just there, doing their own thing. somehow that small sense of shared presence makes starting and continuing tasks much easier.
recently i found a small website that recreates this feeling in a really cozy way, lofi.town.
it’s a cozy virtual space where people gather to study, work, read or focus while listening to lofi music. you create cute avatar and exist in the same environment as other people who are also working on their own things. there are also small tools like a pomodoro timer and a task list.
what i like about it is that it feels calm and gentle. it’s not competitive, not loud, not overwhelming. it feels more like a quiet café on the internet where everyone is just sitting with their thoughts and their tasks. for me, it recreates that body doubling effect really well. knowing that other people are there focusing too makes it easier to sit down and begin.
if you struggle with procrastination or focusing alone, you might enjoy it too.
