I grew up in an upper caste Hindu household , which was super religious. But as a child I always wondered why always women? So many fasts , rituals and prayers for sons and husbands but none for daughters and wives. Why do we always say "Dudo nahao Puto Phalo"? (May god bless you with a son) and not may god bless you with a healthy child? Why should men be always prioritized by women? Why are women not allowed to pray to god or go to the temples when criminals and rapists are? There are so many rituals in a Hindu marriage , which in my opinion are very misogynistic and orthodox , women have to wear sindoor (vermilion) mangalsutra (necklace which symbolizes marriage) , toe rings while men wear nothing. They look the same while a woman changes her whole look. In Hindu marriages the father or mother or anyone close toΒ the bride does the kanyadaan , where they basically transfer the right of ownership of the girl from the father to the husband. Why is that? Are women an object to be owned? I haven't studied other religions in detail as much as Hinduism but from what I have heard they are not any better. I have always believed in god especially Lord Hanuman and Goddess Kali , I see them as my protectors , my parents , my everything. But all these misogynistic practices makes me hate religion.Β
The rise of Patriarchy and it's religious foundation.

Unfortunately religion is often built upon quite a misogynistic foundations. Islam is no better, Christianity has a lot of its own prejudices against women (although to its credit the modern version of Christianity is much more equal than its historic counterpart), even for example religionistic practices of ancient city of Athens were extremely misogynistic. It usually stems from the position of power being with a warrior caste who were originally always men, and so they wanted to keep the power. For that they invented mechanisms and rules to keep other from taking that power from them. With women it was quite easy to control them, just say that their position is naturally inferior to men and it was said by the God(s). And bam, you just excluded a good part of potential competition for power. And they can't say anything about that as that would be a heresy. Now this isn't something that is just inherent part of any religion, more like a historic baggage that can potentially be softened or even removed when the society develops to be more acceptant and just. However, these prejudices are often very hard to overcome since it is still pretty advantageous to a lot of people.
