2. Booktok

As an avid reader I have found myself getting Booktok videos on my fyp. Some of the books I've read from these videos are actually okay/good but, I decided one day I was going to read Haunting Adeline. I will never ever recover from reading this book (reading is a light term I was so disturbed I didn't actually finish it).

Before reading this book I saw video after video that this book was so good everyone needs to read it. ABSOLUTELY NOT. I understand that some people have things they're into and I am not kink shaming I swear, but dude I went into this book with an open mind and left disgusted. I haven't touched this book since I put it down. I didn't even make it half way through. I got to the first 's*x' scene between the main characters and didn't even finish it once I realized what I was reading. The main character "Zade Meadows" is described to be a morally gray but I find that this is incredibly incorrect. He is a r*pist plain and simple. There really is no saving this book to me but to each their own I guess???

On another note I have ready some pretty good books from Booktok. Taking out the horrific experience of trying to reading Haunting Adeline, I have enjoyed a few of the books I have found through Booktok (Not Colleen Hoover, never Colleen Hoover). If He Had Been With Me was one of these books. Is it cringy? Yes. Do some of the things the female lead does make you want to disappear? Yes. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed it as a whole. I feel like unless your reading nonfiction, literature, biographies/autobiographies, etc you have to be able to expect some cringe and you need to just accept it.

I think in order to enjoy a romance book or a Booktok book you need to embrace the cringe but not things that are literally disgusting. Cringe is a pillar to enjoying yourself and your life. If you do not embrace cringe or partake in it, you're missing out enjoying your life a little bit more.  Not sure what the point of this blog was but I love yapping about books lolllll.

I think Hauting Adeline is just a book that fetishizes rape and S/A. It's a cross between booktok and dark romance (by dark romance I mean books that romanticize toxic love, not books like the Phantom of the opera) But about the other things you said, you're right. Be cringe, be free, read BookTok if you want :> I'm fed up with people online who read the great classics and think they're super intelligent, and therefore feel they have the right to offend those who read booktoks. If the book is not romantic or fetishistic about sexual or other types of violence, it's more than fine.

I feel like every book on "Book-tok" is always going to be involved in what they call "Dark romance". When in reality, the book would have the most basic plot and dull writing, but because there are moments of "spice" or "romance" (which is usually rape or SA), they think it's amazing. Some people would really read a whole book of sex and call it a masterpiece.
