For the past 2 years, i've found myself using my lphone ess and less. I attribute it to the fact i simply do not watch short term content like TikTok or youtube shorts, nor do i watch anything on my phone in general.
The Prelude
In 2014, when i was 14, i moved out with my mom, out of a big city i grew up in, into her hometown. But in 2019, at the age of well, 19, it was time for me to go and get myself some higher education, so i moved back in to the big city, to live with my older sibling and attend univeristy.
To cut a long story short, 6 years of stress, mental abuse from my older sibling i was dependent on as a teen, insane mass spamming by said sibling in WhatsApp when they got angry, constant bad news or info coming in university group chats, made me hate using my phone more and more. Even know, a message i did not expect nor want, can make my anxiety spike. Trauma i guess?

The Beginning
Around late 2023, early 2024, i've had a major shift in my head space, i decided that its time to stop worrying, stop trying to live in fast pace of the rat race that is a big city, and just live like i want to. That is also when my love towards aesthetics like Frutiger Aero began to rise. I rediscovered a lot of my old devices, some from my childhood, that i decided to use once more. Part of that decision was simply the nostalgia, the comfort they brought to me, of the memories of 'simpler times'.
Knowing full well it was rose tinted glasses at work, i still couldn't deny, those memories were fond, expiriences that made me who i am now, so i stuck to the good of my childhood, of my early teen years, instead of walloping in the bad of those days, like my sibling, who i fear, gained major anger control issues because of that.

The Devices
One of the first devices i returned back into my life, is my PlayStation Vita! My father, and my older cousin, got it for me for my 11th birthday, the memory of that day are very warm and fond to me. It's been in my possession since then. 9 years in, the screen decided to simply never turn on, but i managed to buy a replacement one and fix it myself!

The second device, was my iPod touch Gen 6, bought to me as a gift as well, on my 16th birthday. It became a reliable music device, and a fun way to enjoy some old ios games, without the pesky fac tof being "Always online, always available" to anyone to text or call me. (I've retired it since getting a new phone, funnily enough, mostly because 16gb cant handle a lot of music, even when its lower quality and mp3)

The third, is a Sony Cybershot T700, rediscovered while visiting my mother and rummaging trough a box full of old tech. I decided to take it, and start using it to take pictures instead of my phone. The vibes that come from the images it takes, are certainly of the 2008 era that its from, but resolution wise, still pretty good, and forget the pesky AI schizo filters that all the phones apply in the image processing pipeline these days, lol! Here is an image i took with it:

The Point
What i'm trying to share in a odd and silly way, is how all these 3 devices, removed 3 major functions from my phone, making it into simply a internet and communications device.
1. The PS Vita removed the factor of video games and entertainment. I can simply play any PSV or PSP game on it, and that's not including all sorts of emulators it has like GBA! And all of that with physical tactile buttons! And i could also pretty comfortably watch movies or anime on it as well, although it does require downloading and moving them to the vita beforehand.
2. iPod touch removed the second, and one of the major, factors, at least for a year. Music. I love music, it is my favorite media, if i had to do a top 3, music would be top, then tv/movie then books. It gave me appreciation of having music available regardless if i was online, i just can listen to what i want, when i want. My phone at the time was a note20, but it was full of junk over 4 years of use, it felt sluggish, and i didn't want to bother cleaning it up to add music to it so iPod served me well, until i got a new fresh phone, a CMF phone 2, which i decided to maintain way more, and set it up to be easy to work with when it comes to music.
3. The Cybershot removed the function taking pictures. I do still use my phone when it's convenient, for online chats and such, and for most daily needs related to pictures, but if i am out on a walk, and i see some wonderful scenery, or an interesting building, i whip out the cybershot, take pictures, and i can only view them and share them once i come back home, as it needs a pc to transfer to! Really makes you take a lot of pictures because you don't know which will be the best, and it has a certain relaxing fact that you don't have to rush, you'll get home later tonight, open up the images, and look at them in peace.
4. Bonus, is that my personal computer, became a hub of almost all of my in home activity, i do not use my phone at home, only my laptop, and my pc. it's nice!

The Conclusion
In the end, i just wanted to share this experience, that i didn't even intend to happen, i simply walked into it because of where my head was mentally, i guess it was seeking comfort of familiar things, and slow pace of life. You may have seen many videos on youtube of people, switching to 'dumb' phones completely, and other device such as that. For some i can imagine it working, but i knew not for me. Hence why i think a less absolute method worked for me, i simply decided that certain things, features and activities, do not need to be tied to a phone, and instead relegated to older, sometimes slower, devices and experiences.
If you have any old devices like that, try it! I personally think it would do good for a lot of peoples mental health to limit use of the phone in such way, but i know its not always realistic in this age of the horrors.
Anyways thanks to anyone who read this blog, its my first ever blog ever, and i'm 25! Never was really the blogging type. Friend me if you wish, you can even message me, i don't mind, i love chatting! Leave a reply if you have the same approach to tech and have a nice day!
