for the past few weeks, I've been eager to try meeting new people from all around the world, to connect with new humans again, and to exchange ideas from our lives, on social platforms that are not inherently made with an algorithm in mind. that's part of the reason why I've chosen to reuse this spacehey account after all those years, and why I'm preparing to try out federated alternatives to popular social apps again.
but, sometimes timezones are fucking it all up, and im the only one seemingly active on the platform. general IM has spoiled us (or me at least) so bad that i cant really stand delays between messages anymore. i need to keep myself entertained even between conversations, if the person im talking with is taking too long to respond.
roblox as an entertainment platform
its pretty clear that roblox has had its ups and downs throughout the years, but corporate greed and bad actors seem to make it ruin itself even worse recently. with the introduction of 'age grouping', partnership with persona, the heavy push for AI, and the removal of legacy content (e.g. static faces), the platform itself has become harder to use for many people (myself included). you no longer get that urge to join a game anymore, to play together with randoms to cooperate or compete, because there's not many games that still follow that tradition.
ive started playing around in older games again, more specifically work at a pizza place --- one of the first games ive tried on the platform back in 2014 --- and it, too, has changed. im finding myself switching between it, minesweeper, and a few more games as well, but that's about it. and in the modern era, even people who do have the ability to chat (e.g. sold their identity to the US govt, or scanned their face) opt not to talk at all.
people have grown to be independent now. there's an odd common feeling between them that just happens to be a lack of friendship, and its weird, because im all for open communication.
the broken mess of chat age grouping
theres no doubt the whole idea was rushed for the investors. Its not thought through whatsoever, and it seems badly implemented. i may chat with someone now, and be unable to chat with them again in the following years once my account age group changes.
but regardless of that, im placed accurately in the 18-20 age group, and have the ability to chat with anyone above the suspected age of 16 (which, to be honest, its more like over the age of 13, but hey at least theres fewer kids spamming slurs around)
there's still no unfiltered chat for people over the age, which i find really stupid since --- if 21+ can only chat with 18+, then why continue using the 13+ text chat filter if an 18+ filter already exists (swearing allowed).
anyways, back on topic, playing certain games with people in your age group sometimes happens to be boring. not because the people are boring, but because the game may be repetitive, grindy, or whatever else. and thats where the chat feature excells. Ive found myself more fond of using it now, after the age gating stuff, than before, strictly because i no longer get harassed on a kids game for stating my opinion.
ive been mesmerized by the kinds of conversations ive been able to have over roblox chat. years of being part of this platform have taught me how to bypass most of the words i use, so i can still chat freely, but this time around it feels safer, and it feels like im able to talk with people who truly understand what im saying. ive been able to share personal experiences from here-around, and talk about serious worldwide subjects, all whilst cooking pizza in a stupid game. its the same kind of feeling like doodling on a call, but instead youre doing something your mind deems 'productive' (e.g. grinding for coins) whilst chatting with randoms via text.
and it shouldn't be like this. how did it get so bad, to the point my most worthful conversations are now starting on a platform like roblox? it feels like the entire game has migrated from something childish, to a platform similar to VRchat, minus the VR part (support for it is still shit). and its just... weird thinking about it like that.
