alternative programs&apps i use

taking a page out of a certain user's book.. hold on a second. HE GOT SUSPENDED!? goddamn. uh.

(png by carmilla)

anyway. i figured its useful to share some of variety of programs i use. he, god bless his soul, shared some of the aesthetics/overall utility programs he used, but i have more of the overall use. if you wanna find some alternatives to popular apps and services maybe something will catch your eye.

obvious but its still worth stating - exercise caution with downloading anything! i might not experience any problems or see any issues but that doesnt mean you cant have any. hell, i might be advertising a virus. who knows! read about these yourself before possibly cursing yourself forever (double with the services that you can download from).

ellipsus - alternative to google docs in terms of writing. has a bunch of the typical crap, but also a unique way to create drafts and plenty of site themes to choose from. honestly the only reason im using this in the first place is sharing my writing with friends and bc the endless highlighted red text of wordpad is super annoying.

telegram - since poeple are finally running from discord heres an alternative. ive been using it for a while bc of my russian friend, but honestly its been a godsend compared to that other thing. sign up with phone number and thats it from the prying. from my experiences from using it, its pretty nice and fast compared to the discord mobile crap i had to withstand. you can make sticker packs that you can use anywhere (and as far as i know theyre limitless), share, etc, the file limit is 50mb, users can make channels and a lot of poeple use them to post art. a big culture on there is to forward others' art, so through one channel you'll find a lot more. there are also tons of bots for variety of things. i mostly use a twitter video downloader. besides it being nice to use a lot of russian poeple are on there (support your russian friends, loads of poeple have commissions open xoxo).

soulseek - remember limewire? me neither! soulseek is that but (from my use) a lot nicer. i mainly use it for music and if youre looking for some higher quality downloads than yt2mp3 then soulseek has you covered. users have really wide libraries of songs and you can download them and use..

no link here. you have a music player/windows media player pre-installed on your device. use it. uninstall spotify. cancel your subscription. get an mp3 player. windows media player legacy and all mp3s i have used have a playlists option. lets free ourselves.

stacher7 - youtube downloader. unfortunetly its a program and not a site but it works pretty well. you can download things to a variety of formats like .opus or .m4a or even to lower quality like 144p for all your crunchy video needs.

archive.org - this is very overall but you have no idea the amount of random stuff you can find uploaded. give it a search and find some bullshit. for example someone shared a 2022 version of photoshop. wow! i use (although scuffed) mspaint and wordpad (R.I.P.) from there. poeple also upload music on there so if you wanna take a dive into some weird niche bullshit there you go!

filegarden - ive seen that poeple use catbox here but i guess ill throw my own into the mix. filegarden is exactly like that - share files. i mainly use them for image-hosting (like the noelle on my profile).

i ran out of ideas. ill probably edit later to add more if ill remember. virus-sharer signing off

+2 for soulseek and archive.org

qq: why do you use telegram over something like signal? i used telegram years ago but their non-standard encryption does not feel safe and nowadays the only messages i get are scammers trying to buy my 3 letter username

also if you're going to download stuff from the internet archive, PLEASE use a download manager like uGet or aria2, or get torrents instead using qBittorrent or Transmission. last time i checked, the direct download speeds were miserable, and the file i attempt to download would geet corrupted midway; download managers prevent that from happening and let you continue downloading if you, for whatever reason, have to pause the download.
also if you're torrenting, please make sure to seed so that other peers can also benefit from the file(s). <3

a majority of the torrents on archive.org are broken and it's a huge problem, i've been working on building a solution for this
