how to study??

i've been living life normally (i think?) in school and have failed some classes. The thing is, what does studying mean? because how i "study" is just by rereading my notes and just trying to memorize that. Is there any more methods of studying for subjects like history or civic education that requires much more understanding and memorizing? if so pls do comment

Helloo hope you’re having a great day!
I relate to you in terms of just reading notes but what really helps me to actually study and remember material is 2 things:

1- answering many questions and exercises because it forces you to look at the answers yourself in the lesson if you got it wrong or you dont know (most of the time i head straight into answering questions because it helps me memorize easier and turning pages of text into a question and answer!! This makes it easier to remember)

2- also *active recall* method and *cornell notetaking* method,

*Active recall:* for example in history: you try to memorize the lesson or a page and read it well obviously most of the time you just skimm through it, now take a paper and write what you remember then add what you forgot preferably in a different color and just read it again. And surprisingly rereading the material or notes even by skimming helps alot to strengthen your memory and it takes like 10-20 minutes

*cornell notetaking* in a nutshell is basically splitting your notes page into three sections:

-first: the main colomn and the biggest for your notes and studying nothing new.

-Second: a thin column to the side called the “cue/question” column: you turn the material you wrote down into questions and if you hide the main colomn with your hand you can use the cue column to quiz yourself (and as i said above turning paragraphs to points or questions and answers makes it easier to remember)

-third: is the wide part below your notes section but still smaller ofcourse and thats for summarizing the material in tiny points or keywords to shake ip your memory and really helps when you want to revise lightly in a rush

(I love how i said in a nutshell then i yapped my bad🥹🥹)
I suggest you read the articles about active recall and cornell notetaking for better visual explanation from e-student.org

Ofcourse studying and finding the best form of studying comes through trial and error and testing different popular studying methods and see what works best for you. Wish you best of luck in your studies

Honestly I just pull up videos, worksheets, textbooks, and such, stuff all the material into my head by making notes, posters, visual aids or explaining it to someone and I sometimes I do practice questions to test myself. I also usually have a list of all the material so I can see what I understand and what I don’t
