Why you think your poems are bad, how they lack substance

Honestly I’m gonna call myself out too. But what I see, A LOT, is people being weird just to be weird. Sure you can write about cannibalism, gore, and murder. But where does that get you? Or take an abstract idea and write about it. Usually this results in horrible ‘straightforward-ness.’ These poems lack substance. Usually, it’s pretty evident too. I see two different poems about the same topic, one makes me cringe and then the other I adore. It’s always obvious when a poem lacks substance, it comes across so feigned. Poems are mostly about execution, you could come up with the greatest idea and write the poorest poem you’ve ever written. So, BREAK THIS HABIT!! You can still write about odd topics, or disregard this complaint. But, the takeaway from this is to not write about cannibalism, gore, murder, rape, etc, etc, just for the sake of being taboo. Prove a point!!

Sorry for any typos, written on mobile

I've noticed this a lot lately!!1 People writing poetry that they very clearly just aren't all that passionate about, just for the sake of having that particular topic or style on their profile.

I could find a million and one poems about cannibalism as a metaphor yadda yadda yadda that all use the same imagery, similar tone, etc - and don't get me wrong they aren't *all* poorly written, but I just can't find it in me to care about something that the writer themselves clearly doesn't care much about.

I would probably find a poem written by a fourth grader about their pet dog or something more interesting than "feminism and pomegranates; the poem" because at least I know it's specific to them, and not just reworded from Pinterest.

When I want to read a poem about cannibalism, or one with similar topics, I love Mary-Kate’s works. Or her username is BrideOfTheFlies!!

This is exactly who I had in mind writing this - I absolutely love her poetry because you can tell she isn't writing about all that good heavy stuff just for the sake of it. It never seemed - to me - like she was doing it for shock factor or performative reasons which is just way too common lately ٩(^ᗜ^ )و

So many people who try to mimic that style come across as disingenuous because they're afraid to write like themselves or experiment. (。ᵕ ◞ _◟)
