What is up with text muds? Are they still around?

I thought of starting a fantasy text RPG myself, but i'd like to ask casual players before joining. So, is it worth in 2026? How does it work really and which are best websites? I'm looking for variety, not ultra-serious tone, freedom to experiment and something that will bring me this classic 2000s sense of community.

I got couple of questions cuz it really piqued my interest.

- Is text mud and text rpg the same thing?

- Does it favor newbie and single-player experience?

- Do you need experience in writing or is it more casual?

- Anything else i need to know?
