aurelia spent a majority of her evenings in the library, getting her reading done. required reading was a large part of her education as an english major. sometimes it felt like it was all she did. but tonight was different.
the last thing she remembered was closing her eyes for just a moment, determined to rest her eyes before she continued reading. but when she awoke, more time had clearly passed. the sun had completely set, and it was 7:32 PM when she checked her phone.
most peculiar was the leather jacket resting on her shoulders. it definitely wasn't hers, but she did recognize it. it was library guy's: the attractive man she often saw in the classic literature section of the library near where she always sat. maybe this meant she'd finally be able to speak to him.
she'd always been too shy before. after all, it was clear to her that he wasn't a student. if he was, she'd never seen him on campus, and he had to at least be a graduate student. he was clearly a bit older than her, not that that was a deterrent for her. she was well aware that it should be, but her mind and her heart weren't always in agreement.
aurelia stands in the cold corridor of gotham's arkham asylum. her brother was here... again. she wanted to see him. whether or not he'd entertain her visit was up in the air, like a coin flipping, waiting to be designated heads or tails. her hands are clenched into fists at her sides, trying to muster up the gall to approach.
"...miss?" the desk receptionist prompts, an eyebrow quirked at her. "are you here to see someone?"
she's finally drawn from her internal debate, attention drawn back to the real world. she approaches the desk. "harvey dent... please."
the receptionist gives her a look. she can't discern if it's pity, judgement, or both. the receptionist speaks into a phone, words inaudible through the protective glass between them. the whole world seems to stand still before the receptionist shakes her head. aurelia's shoulders sag with disappointment.
"...thank you anyway."
aurelia turns back towards the exit, nails digging into her palms. her eyes feel warm, but she blinks the sensation away. she inhales shakily. the rejection never seemed easier to swallow, regardless of how many times she forced it down.
aurelia nearly falls backwards out of her chair as her front door swings open. well, her apartment only had one entrance, but the point stood. her terror turns to confusion as her brain takes in the intruder. it was... her brother?
"harv...?" she manages, brows raised.
harvey closes the door behind him, tossing her spare key at her. "hide it better," he says, taking a seat across from her at the kitchen table.
"i... wha... what?!" aurelia fumbles the key before it clinks to the floor. "what are you doing here?"
"am i not allowed to visit you?" he rolls his eyes, absently flipping his coin.
"i mean, i guess you can...but, like, aren't you supposed to be in arkham?"
there's a moment of silent communication. harvey gives her an unimpressed look, and aurelia just looks embarrassed. arkham's security was worth as much as sand on the beach, and it was a revolving door of gotham's craziest. it was no surprise that he hadn't stayed. it was a stupid question, and they were both aware of it.
"hey- um- if you're a fugitive, why would you come here? are you trying to get me in trouble?" she frowns, brows knitted with worry.
"fine, i'll leave then," harvey huffs, moving to stand.
"no, harvey, wait-" aurelia stumbles over to him, arms wrapping around him tightly. "i... i'm sorry."
he stands still, frozen. aurelia buries her face into him. he raises a hand to push her away, but he hesitates. he lets his hand rest on her head, her blonde hair. her roots were beginning to grow out, black as obsidian. his jaw clenches. another feature they didn't quite share, as a result of their mother's infidelity.
"let go, aurelia," he says, clipped and cold.
her grip falters, eyes raising to him. "harvey, please, don't-"
"let. go."
aurelia's phone vibrates on her bed. she picks it up tiredly. she'd just gotten back to her apartment. she'd been to class and then she'd spent the rest of her day tutoring. it was her friend, dennis.
[dennis]: YOOO LIA!! :D
aurelia types back, a small smile gracing her exhausted features.
[aurelia]: hallo dennis ^^ what's up?
she doesn't have time to set her phone down before it vibrates again.
[dennis]: wanna call and play FNAF together?
it's not long before the two are on a video call. aurelia sits at her desk, phone set up behind her computer. dennis's phone is set up behind him, his back and computer on display. the set-up only makes it more amusing when dennis gets his first jumpscare, nearly leaping out of his computer chair.
"HOLY SHIT-"
"dude," aurelia can't help but smile, stifling a laugh. "it's not even that scary..."
